The entire Florida Peninsula has begun to experience Hurricane Irma following landfall at Marco Island. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Prayers for all in the storm path.

its true..some do want the worst outcome, though they wont admit it. I called on the 7th at least that this storm would landfall as a Cat 3. A few of us were cheering it on to Cuba, you’d have thought we committed a murder...hysterical posting of graphs showing 160 m.p.h. winds in Ft Lauderdale..rantings that “no way will Cuba have any effect”...wild screams about “BATHWATER”..this was all hyped about what a storm did 1000 miles earlier, and people fall for it all the time. These larger storms always interact with land and fall apart, seen it happen over and over. But, you are right...some were literally enraged that the storm weakened..some of us just got it right after all....
Guess I’m a “down-caster,” guilty as charged. I wanted the storm to weaken or break up to help the people and innocent animals in Florida, shame on me. Glad it did, not to be “right” but because the damage was far less severe than it would have been, had the official forecasts held up.
Third request—Last time people walked in an empty Tampa Bay before Irma? Pretty please? Did I mention my power has been out since Irma came by?
The hurricane just came through there, what, a day ago, so a little patience might be in order as far as your electric service being restored. I know it’s uncomfortable and inconvenient to lose power.
Regarding the unusually low tide ahead of the storm in Tampa Bay, I see no accounts of this having occurred in the past. I see that the historic 1848 and 1921 storms had very noteworthy storm surge, however I don’t believe the storm surge from Irma could be described as such.
So, after having asked about this three times now, I have to assume that you attach some great significance to this as to severity, so you could save a little time in just laying it out, could you please?
Me, as I’ve replied several times, I see it as having actually been a good thing, since surge in Tampa Bay was not nearly the problem originally feared.
As a casual storm watcher I was struck by how fast Irma lost power when it came onshore. Fascinating.
when the storm interacted with Cuba, the inner structure was changed. Hurricanes are “custom” storms..each one unique. Scientist know very little about the inner structure of hurricanes. That night, the discussion at the NHC was that Cuba would have little or no effect on Irma..however, it never re intensified and they later on seemed puzzled by this. It was literally a “different “ storm ....
I noticed the change that day also; just from a few images on tv and FR. It was clear to me that the nature of the eye had changed.
Keep digging—there are indeed reports of people walking in the Tampa Bay. What is storm surge? Does Tampa Bay empty during low tide every year? Why are you saying I am impatient about power restoration? I am changing and recharging battery packs at this hour. Will be emptying contents of refrigerator at daylight and more yard cleanup. You are great for minimizing our circumstances here. What are you doing other than tossing out useless info?
You reminded me that you were still without power, I pointed out that the storm just moved out yesterday. Seems a pretty linear and logical response to me.

I’m sure you’ll correct me if I’m mistaken, but you seem to take issue with that characterization, so no need for me to dig, when you can just lay it out since you have your information at hand.
Keep in mind, we’ve had a flyover at 2,000 ft to inspect the damage down in the Keys. Battered but intact I believe was the description from your governor, or maybe it was a senator.
In other words, this was in no way comparable to the Islamorada Labor Day hurricane.
Well, maybe the predicted track was somewhat similar. Is that why everyone panicked and went off the rails when the storm was clearly disorganized and slowed due to grazing Cuba?

Excellent analysis! Also—that Irma made landfall further south, moving just slightly east of predictions on the FL pennsula changed all sorts of potential impacts. Fyi—we received robo call that morning warning of 15ft surge if Irma made landfall near the mouth of Tampa Bay. Some scary watch and wait hours followed that possibility.
Why are you comparing this storm to other storms, ad nauseum? No two hurricanes are alike—ever. Again, you are exposing your obsessive need to babble, rather than to research and offer up one iota of useful info. You are wasting my battery power by cluttering up this thread. Please stop.
Please control the personal attacks, your own stated desire for this thread is for it to be informational. You’re the one who keeps asking for historical examples of Tampa Bay being largely emptied of water due to an unusually low tide, so if you can manage to be civil maybe you can introduce this information to the thread and not be exposed to my “babble, ad nauseam” as you so sweetly put it.

She said there is a Denny's just down the street with a generator & she thinks that will be a very good thing in the coming days. My guess is she'll end up knowing the menu rather well! She's an elderly widow with a heart condition & lives alone so it was really good to hear from her
Just saw this article - it's pretty good, actually with some pictures to go with it. When you see just how close ... but for 'this' or 'that', Irma came to inflicting 'worse case' on FL, well .... personally, I think prayers were answered.

Quick Update — FEMA convoys of 100-200 Semis are leaving Maxwell AFB here in Montgomery this morning and heading that way. over 800 trucks of Supplies and accompanying personnel were pre-positioned here last week and have just been waiting for the order to roll. All the convoys will have police escorts all the way to their Florida destinations.
Hi there, we are without power and if you leave or try to get back into Glynn County the guards will not let you back in. It’s pretty sad that some people consider it nothing significant unless the whole state looks like ground zero for Hurricane Andrew.
Then they might condescend that it was good to warn people.
