A month ago, this election looked like a snoozefest. The center-right National Party has down a decent job in leading the nation since 2008, and was far ahead in the polls, now under new leadership. Then, the Labour Party elected a new leader - Jacinda Ardern - and she has excited impressionable voters while espousing hard left views. Suddenly, the race has become very competitive, with Labour having a slight advantage relative to National, and with the real possibility that Winston Peters of the populist New Zealand First Party will play the role of kingmaker.
Three polls have just been released. The referenced poll from Bauer Media Insights and a poll from Colmar Burton indicate basically the same thing (what I have described above). The third poll, an internet-based poll of rather small size, shows a strong lead for Labour, but it is unbelievable.

New Zealand was already Socialist when I left there 45 years ago...
why is anyone surprise they finally got to where they were heading...
I’m just surprised it took them so long...
Did the swimmer ever swim to NZ?
