Trump’s Deal with Democrats Is a Warning to Republicans — Establishment and Conservative Alike

President Donald Trump reached a deal with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to raise the debt limit, fund Hurricane Harvey relief, and keep the government open until December.

The deal is a warning to Republicans — primarily to the party establishment, which has fought Trump at every turn, but also to conservative Republicans, who have long worried about Trump shifting leftwards.

It is no secret that Trump is frustrated with the party establishment, and particularly with congressional leaders, notably Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who failed to whip his caucus into delivering the votes to repeal and replace Obamacare.

By working with Democrats, Trump can bypass the Republican leadership, GOP moderates, and personal foes like Sens. John McCain (R-AZ). However, it also means that he can cobble deals together between liberal Republicans and the Democrat minority, leaving conservatives out in the cold.

The only way to stop him is for Republicans to unite. By showing he can deal with Pelosi and Schumer, Trump may have found the one way of making them do so.

As much as I hate Pelosi & Schumer, at least they are the expected opposition. I really am sick & tired of getting screwed over by our “own” party. So, bend over & take it Ryan & McConnell, because Trump just schlonged you!

Exactly right.

Trump gave McConnell and Ryan seven full months to get off their asses and start producing.

If Trump can make decent deals with the Democrats, he should go for it.

Let McConnell and Ryan die on the vine.

Let the public see what two massive failures these two have been.

Despite my nausea at seeing Schumer and Pelosi in the Oval Office, Trump stuck it to McConnel and Ryan.

Trump is with the voters, not the small base of donors that the GOPE has been kowtowing to forever. I think that inside the beltway they forget that they are supposed to be representing their constituents, and that these people do not in general have IQ’s hovering at room temperature. The GOPE has been traitorous in the extreme, and though Trump might expect that of the Democrats, coming from the Republicans is a whole other thing altogether. My hope is that the GOPE will be replaced with Trump Republicans in the upcoming cycle.

McConnell was scheming to use the "must pass" Harvey bill to extend the debt ceiling for 18 months, pushing it past the 2018 election and taking away Trump's leverage to shut down the government to force Republicans to move on his agenda.

By working with Schumer to get a 3-month extension, Trump is undercutting McConnell's attempt to undermine Trump, making Republicans have to deal with this again in 3 months instead of safely after the midterm elections.

Trump did this to keep shutting down the government for leverage as a viable option. McConnell was trying to outflank Trump's ability to do that by using Harvey to force Trump into approving McConnell's extension. Trump turned the tables on him.

This is a great move, despite the griping that will come from the kneejerk people.

Trump doesn’t adore an ideology. He adores results, period.

Produce or be left out of the process, that’s the message to Republicans.

The agreements themselves are small ball, but the message is large. I think it’s going to play well in middle America too.

And if those Pandy Assers don’t understand why this just happened, I predict it will happen again. This is what happens when you dig your heels in and walk away from the table.

Interesting but dangerous move by President Trump. All four congressional leaders are snakes - beholden to their swamp financiers. Trump is stirring the swamp, not draining it.

Trump is giving a big F U to McConnell and Ryan. They won’t move on a decent Obamacare repeal, tax cuts, or funding the wall. They won’t stand up and support Trump against the scurrilous Russia allegations.

If the GOP is going to act like Dems, Trump may as well deal with the real thing.

Conservatism will not move forward unless the swamp is drained.

When the next SCOTUS vacancy appears and Schumer demands that Trump choose a "Mainstream Moderate" don't come crying to me.

you know the GOP leadership was going to go on for the debt ceiling increase they’ve already done it before

so Trump just bypass the GOP backstabbers and basically made lemonade out of lemons...

here’s the thing the GOP is in the majority so they don’t have to pass it

Really what Trump is doing is tossing all these things the den limit the dreamers into the GOP majority... it’s on them to not pass it ... in other words do the job they were elected to do Trump is forcing their hand...

Trump does not do any legislation he can only sign it or not sign it it’s up to the GOP majority Congress to pass or not pass legislation

Trump is forcing the GOPe to put up ...the GOPe was playing to Trump’s left ..so its was Dem far left.. GOP middle left.. Trump isolated on the right

Trump in going to the middle in between the GOP and the Dems he can force the GOP to go right

The GOP has shown that they are incapable or unwilling to govern,
Trump apparently realizes it too.

The funny thing is, these RINOS are just like the media - they think Trump is some idiot & they are far more clever & sophisticated. They try to get one over on him, but he always has the last laugh.

Ok, but you are assuming facts not in evidence.

When it all works out fine, don’t claim you knew all along.
