If you’re going to rename a Boston street, it should be Charles

If The Boston Globe is so interested in confronting the “dark legacies” of racism by changing the street named after former Boston Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey, perhaps Charles Street should be next. John Henry, the current owner of the Red Sox — as well as the Globe — has let it be known through his paper that Yawkey’s legacy “is forever tainted by his racist actions” by not hiring black baseball players in a timely fashion.

The Globe tied Yawkey to proslavery, Civil War Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, whose statues in the name of equality are being smashed everywhere by America’s version of the Taliban

I admit being a bit surprised that Boston didn’t go around and change the names of all things honoring their British legacy after the revolution. But having a street named for a notorious English King sounds bizarre, just on general principles.

The author should have done some proofreading:

"Charles precipitated the first English Civil War when he absolved Parliament."

My thought, too. There are a lot of things named "Charles" in Boston, though, because they didn't rename the river.

Some place names were changed after the Revolution. Charleston, SC was originally Charles Town, and just changing the spelling was enough after the Revolution. Boston's State Street was once King Street. Crown Street in New York became Liberty Street. A King Street became Pine Street and Queen Street became Cedar, but as the city grew there was room for more King and Queen Streets.

There was this, though:

They must re-name the Charles River, and Charlestown, and... on and on.

It is difficult to parse leftist wackiness, but it looks like there is a "secret" hierarchy of racism.

(1)The more recently you were racist (you know, like by throwing a banana in a tree in Mississippi in 2017) the more racist you were.

(2)Racists in sports are bigger racists than racists in other endeavors.

(3)White slave traders are racists but Muslim or Native American slave traders are not.

(4)No outrage should be directed against Spain or Portugal even through they ruled the world in the 1500s when slavery was rampant everywhere.

So confusing to be politically correct--I have whiplash!

I’ve always thought that woman in the hat was over-dressed for the occasion.
