Building a Modern Marshmallow Test: New Ways to Measure Social-Emotional Learning
Education Week ^ | 08/10/2017 | Evie Blad

Is there a way to consistently and accurately measure students' ability to do things like recognize emotions, solve peer conflicts, and exercise self-control? What if they don't even realize those things are being measured?

The winners of a recent design challenge took a crack at it, proposing everything from analyzing students' subtle behaviors when taking computer-based tests to asking them to play video games that simulate real-world experiences and gauging how they respond.

The contest winners responded to a prompt from a working group that is seeking to advance conversations about measurement. That group includes the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, or CASEL, researchers from several major universities, and the CORE districts, a group of large California school systems that have piloted social-emotional learning measures.

Social-emotional learning emphasizes the personal and relational skills researchers and employers say students need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom, skills like social awareness and self-management. Measurements that track how students are performing in these areas would help schools decide if their approaches and programs are successful, educators say, and some policymakers have pushed for more precise measurements that might allow for the inclusion of so-called non-cognitive skills in states' school accountability models.

This is the key sentence that caught my attention..

"..the CORE districts, a group of large California school systems that have piloted social-emotional learning measures."

Is this the purpose of schools?

Studying your children regarding their social-emotional learning.

Experimenting on your children?

Meanwhile, who is teaching the kids how to read properly, why can't kids can do proper penmanship and what math skills?

But, they do know how to emote.

Liberals are addicted to change itself. Whatever is in place, must be replaced with something else. Repeat and repeat. The content is meaningless. They have become very destructive.

The marshmallow test is a way to gage one”s capacity to delay gratification to obtain a greater reward.

Even when conducted I was not so sure about the conclusions drawn. That said as far as I am concerned schools shouldn’t be trying to measure anything other than what the students have learned.

...and yet the appearance is anything and everything but reading writing history, science, civics and arithmetic.

Schools used to spend time teaching children how to think.
Now they focus on what to think.
Political dogma is the central task, not education.

While I can see an upside to such research, I also see a VERY NEGATIVE side.

The upside tells me that perhaps the intent IS legit and that by evaluating their teaching methods, it might help those who are exposed to possibly be better prepared as they move on.

On the DOWN SIDE, I see this as an evaluation of the effectiveness of their existing brainwashing techniques which, when the results are analyzed will give opportunity to change “improve” the methods used, equaling to better brainwashing methods.

yes ed activists have been screaming about this for some time.
The loss of academics to social emotional learning vs. fact-based knowledge
total mind control and what we are seeing with wound up angry youth coming out of our education systems. I wish Trump had time to understand what is going on in education these are the training camps.

Because to measure will lay bare uncomfortable truths regarding the learning capacities of the population.

“No child left behind” nice slogan, virtue signaling to attract the “soccer mom” vote. However counter to the that is the reality that a certain percentage will be left behind no matter what you do. It doesn’t make any difference how much you spend, do or how many theories you concoct on “how to educate”. A certain number will chose not to be educated and a certain number can’t be! Nothing will change that!

Schools are run by psychologists. Hunan experimentation is their calling. Most of our societal breakdown can be traced to the false teachings of these frauds.

The word “socialization” that school control freaks love to throw around makes me skeeve. Stamp out individuals, originals, creatives, shy kids, spiritual kids, thoughtful kids, seriously intellectual kids....
