Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival.

It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day.

The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism.

In the late 1880's, labor organizations began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of Labor Day as an official state holiday. The first states to declare it a state holiday in, 1887, were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday.

Today, Labor Day is observed not only in the U.S. but also in Canada, and in other industrialized nations. While it is a general holiday in the United States, its roots in the working class remain clearer in European countries.

For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer. But why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women.

Membership in labor unions in the United States reached an all-time high in the 1950s when about 40 percent of the work force belonged to unions. Today, union membership is less than 12 percent of the working population and closing in on just 11 percent. Labor Day now carries less significance as a celebration of working people and more as the end of summer. Schools, government offices and businesses are closed on Labor Day so people can get in one last trip to the beach or have one last cookout before the weather starts to turn colder.

Howdy, LUV.

How was your day? Were you able to get a Peaches-free night so you’d feel worth a flip? LOL

Yes! I got a text from the living room from hubby saying that he’d put them both out. LOL!

That’s how we communicate. Crazy, huh? But we had company and he didn’t want to yell back to me. He was watching something stupid on the TV in there and I was being very intellectual *snork* in here.

Anyway. I did sleep well, but 7am was still too darn early! :)

Good evening, Mayor, and thank you for today’s sustenance for body and soul.

Do you get Labor Day off?

It’s one of the greats in my book.
Gort totally freaked me out when I was little. He was big and he was baaaaaaaad.

At least they have it in the forecast rather than more heat to not look forward to. Maybe this will be your last hot spell.

We were downright chilly Friday with a high of only 65. It drizzled all day as the remnants of Harvey slowly moved out.
Low 80s today, a couple more days of 80s, then back into the 70s the rest of the week. Feels like Fall though that’s still almost 3 weeks off.

Regarding the Original “Day the Earth Stood Still”...
I like how science fiction from that era used “creepy music”
to emphasize the scenes.

Nice of him to put both the kittehs out. You need your sleep when you have to get up so early the next morning. That hurts bad enough as it is!

But of course! That’s part of what made those movies so cool! LOL

I grew up on these old sci-fi and horror movies and still enjoy watching them.

How is the labor going on your reno? Everyone get the day off?

I’m alone with my Mom today and tomorrow. Yesterday there were 2 of us and we could have easily used a third. Today is not going well. I’ve spent all day running back and forth. She is distraught that she can’t stand at all as of the middle of the night. She asked to be left in the basement. We don’t have a basement. Then leave me in traffic. *sigh* She wants to be with my Dad.

We have a different perspective. I consider them ALL days off.

Any day is a good day when there are no bosses!! LOL! Well...maybe the spouse, but that’s all. :) And mine doesn’t boss me. He’s a smart cookie!
