'Somebody Help Me!' Nurse Arrested After Refusing to Draw Blood

(SALT LAKE CITY) — A Utah police officer's body camera video shows a hospital nurse being handcuffed after refusing to draw blood on an unconscious patient.

The video taken at University Hospital in Salt Lake City shows nurse Alex Wubbels calmly explaining to Salt Lake detective Jeff Payne that she couldn't draw blood on a patient who had been injured in a car accident. She told the officer a patient was required to give consent for a blood sample or be under arrest. Otherwise, she said police needed a warrant.

The dispute ended with Payne telling the nurse she was under arrest and physically moving her out of the hospital while she screamed.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Wubbels was not charged. Police have started an internal investigation, but Payne remains on duty.

Alaska Wolf is that you?

Or are you a clone with the same mantra and thought processes?

Common, you can admit it...

Nurse was simply interfering.

Nope. She was enforcing the law.

She’s lucky she wasn’t charged.

Nope. The eventual tax-payers' payout to her would likely be larger, had she been charged.

Of course, the larger the better! Tax-payers need to be trained not to hire pigs!

She should have sued. Would have won bigly.

That's still in the future.

Hopefully, Yuuge $$.

This would mean no person who is unconscious could ever have their blood taken for tests.

Nonsense. Dr's orders or Warrant or Suspect in a crime.

Federal truckers' regs would appear to run into HIPPA.

It’s “Argument Clinic” (Monty Python).

I agree 100% with you - Heck, I’m POA for Health for my Dad and medical personnel have to follow strict HIPPA rules to release information to me.

Try watching & listening to the bloody video, B4 the cop lunges at the nurse!!! The cop WAS conversing with the nurse’s supervisor via the nurse’s smartphone (speakerphone). Most of that is clearly audible. The nurse also showed him a copy of the protocol the Hospital & Police Dept. had agreed to. Can’t he read?

Then HE went nuts first. Actually, he was pretty damn irrational leading up to that. (”Crazy” takes many forms - if she’d experienced similar B4, she’d likely be scared to death.)

Hopefully, this matter will go quietly away

Actually, no. This nation needs to fix this stuff, even if it is relatively rare. And, do it in a way so taxpayers are not on the $$ hook, and bad cops are.

I respect the office and function of the police. In this particular case, that policeman, and those responsible for his behavior, were wrong. At best, he should publicly make amends to the nurse and hospital staff and be put on probation.

“I respect the office and function of the police.”

I do too, and I’d be the first one there to help a downed officer. The police truly are the thin blue line that separates us from the crazies out there. But, in the back of our minds, we hope any interactions we have with the police are with the good ones (the majority)..and not with a “Detective Payne”.

Rhetorical question...This happened over a month ago. Only now the Chief of Police and Mayor are outraged?

Oh, We have a big and vocal Jackboot Licker Brigade, a/k/a The Cops Can Do No Wrong fan club on FR.

It's actually smaller than it would appear. There are about 10 names that you can reliably predict to take the side of the police state no matter how wrong or unhinged they are. It seems like more because you'll find one or two on a thread that will continue to dance and sing their tune for hours at a time. I suspect they are on "disability", and have lots of spare time since the taxpayer continues to support their lard ass regardless of their actual ability to work.

Ten to 15 years ago, I'd have agreed with you, but it's a lot better now than it used to be. Like leftists, this small number of jackboot supporters make much more noise than would normally be indicated by their actual numbers. I've seen them take a single word or phrase from an account and cling to it like it was holy writ for hours, disregarding anything to the contrary. Again, as I said earlier in the thread, reasonable people will occasionally be on one side of the other, but unreasonable people? Reality doesn't intrude on their worldview.

Yeah, I know what a rhetorical question is, but I'll answer it anyway. The video got out and went viral. Body cams are there to protect both sides of the encounter. In this case, it clearly showed the officer was unhinged and in the wrong, and the nurse absolutely within her rights.

The lawsuit will be infinite in quantity, and no one should rest until that renegade cop is fired.

The chief (perhaps not the mayor) should have reviewed the body cam several weeks ago and suspended the officer then.

Nurse needs to be fired and lose her credentials as soon as possible. Possibly charged with aiding and abetting a crime after the fact as well.

You are effing insane.

She read off a document that the police department agreed to, and the police failed to meet any of the standards.

So Officer RespectMahAuthoritah simply arrests her.

The lawsuit will be delicious and quite large.
