Oregon's plan to evaluate schools' performance, help schools judged to be weak performers and otherwise carry out federal education mandates fully meets federal government standards, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos told Gov. Kate Brown Wednesday.
"I am pleased to approve Oregon's... plan," DeVos wrote to Brown and state schools chief Salam Noor. "I congratulate you on this significant accomplishment."
All states are required to file plans showing how they will comply with the federal Every Student Succeeds Act. Unlike the widely despised No Child Left Behind law, the new federal K-12 law leaves a lot of discretion to states. Most other states' plans have already gotten federal approval.
Oregon took advantage of the more permissive federal law to expand its definitions of what constitutes poor school performance and what it will do to spur better outcomes at schools where it detects the problem.
Thanks in part to the work of Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., the law will require states including Oregon to pay more attention to high schools that fail to graduate more than two-thirds of their graduates on time.
Pass. Pass. Pass. Fail...Pass. Pass. Pass. Fail...Pass.
The name of the legislative act will be the solution.
The numbers will then look great - 100% pass!
The Federal govt. has no role in primary or secondary education, a responsibility of the individual states. The entire Dept. of Education is unconstitutional. DeVos should be about blowing up the dept., not signing off on its illegal mandates. Sheesh.
Guarantees that the U.S. will never regain it's former (pre- 1964) status of being the world's finest.
Looks like more and more this is W’s Third Term.
New package, same bilge. DeVos still pumping Common Core.
Shut down the US Dept of Ed.
Yep—the feds shouldn’t be approving or disapproving any state-level plans at all.
Indoctrination program with Byzantine trails to unforeseen government control. Alexander Lamar TN behind this all u need to know. Sad that Trump was not hip to what they are doing in ed. All of these wound up AntiFa thugs should produce a sense of urgency in turning off the globalist programming
I had hoped that the Secretary of Education would be making a plan to dismantle the agency. In its place, issue federal guidelines for a required number of units of classical civics instruction for all grades AND for any incoming public official.
What happened to eliminating Common Core and putting a stop to anti-American and otherwise perverted indoctrination?
Or have the DC cocktail parties become more important?
We must start closing federal departments. They provide a central point of control and cause much mischief, and are bankrupting us.
If the basturd is dumb — flunk their butts!! We are a merit based country— not a communist country!!
There should be NO federal standards or anything else that the states can be answerable to the Federal government for, no federal requirements and no federal aid at all from K through grad school.
They might vote Democrat (someday), therefore they deserve passing grades, citizenship, and much more.
“What happened to eliminating Common Core and putting a stop to anti-American and otherwise perverted indoctrination?”
What happened is that so-called conservatives sit on their fat, useless asses and never attend schoolboard meetings. It’s too much trouble for these mammon-worshipping fake conservatives to get involved in their communities. They’re too busy managing their stock portfolios, barbecuing ribs and remodeling their kitchens.
Shouldn’t the DOE real estate be up for sale by now?
Point well taken.
However, if the swamp is to be drained - as the President vowed to do - that necessarily includes the heavily infiltrated education system.
The last thing Betsy DeVos should be doing is sitting on her hands.
