MTV's glitzy awards show took a political turn Sunday at a tense time in the United States, with the music world's top stars taking aim at white supremacists and President Donald Trump.
The Video Music Awards, generally watched more for pop culture moments than for news of the winners, also gave Taylor Swift a platform to show off a new, darker image as she premiered her new video.
Pop superstar Katy Perry, the host of the gala, floated onto the stage in Los Angeles in a spacesuit reminiscent of the awards' "Moonman" statuette -- rechristened "Moon Person" as part of a gender-neutral drive this year.
MTV merged its male and female categories for the awards and invited a number of transgender US servicepeople to watch the show -- two days after Trump ordered a ban on new transgender recruits in the military.
Perry, one of the most vocal celebrity campaigners for defeated candidate Hillary Clinton, took aim at Trump as she urged fans to choose a winner in a category that remained open to online voting.
"This is one election where the popular vote actually matters," Perry quipped. "But hurry up before some random Russian pop star wins."
Paris Jackson, a model and the daughter of the late "King of Pop" Michael Jackson, took aim at the white supremacists who marched on August 12 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
"We must show these Nazis," she said

I’d wager that there are far more neo-Commies (born after the fall of the Berlin Wall) in the US than “neo-Nazis”.
F&#k them all. Neither supports a Constitutional American worldview.
Because they’ve never been political before, right?
Does anyone care?
In 2004 MTV repeated interrupted their programming with “newsflash” reports (fake news, BTW) that GW Bush was bringing back the draft (with the implication that you’d better vote Kerry if you didn’t wanna be drafted).
The only legislation that was in the House or Senate was authored and sponsored entirely by Democrackheads.
MTV lies to their viewers and promote bullsh!t music pop stars.
Was MTV political in the 1980s when Al and Tipper Gore were burning records to get national attention so he could run for President in 1988 or were they political in 2000 when they put all of that behind them and pushed his candidacy over Bush?
The video awards have ALWAYS been political unless Democrats are in control.
MTV is state media.
Overaged rockers playing to the lib gallery.
What’s MTV?
I may watch ten minutes of videos from what will undoubtedly be a boring three-hour event.
I was walking through the room while my was was channel surfing and I caught a moment of some freaky-looking young woman engaged in a very pathetic attempt at humor. I figure is must have been this show.
I didn’t even know there WAS such a thing as “MTV Awards”, much less that they had “gone political”.
Internet Killed the Video Star.
I think MTV stands for “More Trump Victories”.
R-i-i-i-i-i-ght!
I remember MTV.
I heard it’s channel about teen pregnancy.
I could not find MTV on cable if I tried. I now have free tv and a Roku box so never see this except in news stories.
I suspect they rant as they do as most have zero talent other then being freaky.
