Railroads are dying. Natural gas is replacing coal. Coal is shipped by rail. Gas is shipped by pipelines.
Find a job in the growing gas industry
Railroads are not dying.
BNSF is hiring.
I’m guessing you don’t know much about the railroad and what all it actually delivers. Can’t pipeline everything everywhere, sure as hell can’t truck the volume the railroad moves for the cost it moves it. It’s not just stuff we consume in America, we are shipping coal, grain etc., to other countries and moving it to ports by rail.
There are companies that are shrinking and companies that are more adaptable to the market that are growing again.
Having said that, railroading is not an easy job. In fact, I would prefer working at almost any other job than the railroad, but no one wants to pay me what the railroad pays for my education level(that doesn’t involve going overseas)
The railroads aren’t dying. I can promise you that. Lots of coal heads to Savannah, Charleston and Jacksonville for shipment overseas. Rail, for all its faults, is still cheaper than a truck. Rail is a double edged sword. The FRA has lots of restrictions, that some say hamper how the industry runs. But, when things go bad, they can be catastrophic.
I see your point, but it isn’t as simple as what you say.
RRs need some new tech to help with their mass packet switching network.
Remote decoupling, automated switchers, autonomous locos with remote sensing drones flying ahead.
Whatever it takes to keep the loaded railcars moving way closer to 100% of the time.
