South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said that a “projectile” had been fired into the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan on Saturday morning. It was not immediately clear what kind of missile it was. The launch comes during joint exercises between the U.S. and South Korean militaries, exercises that North Korea always strongly protests, considering them preparation for an invasion. The headline is a little misleading. Just about all missiles of this type are ballistic, which retry much means they are powered on the way up and free fall on the way down. The little rockets I shot up as a kid were ballistic.

Ballistic from the french, balle (bullet), leads many to believe the term denotes lack of terminal guidance, since bullets (for now) obviously are not guided.
While the terminal portion of missile flight certainly lacks powered flight, the missile usually does not go lacking for maneuverable *guidance*.
But I’m sure many will others will chime in on this point.
Well lately the US Navy does look rather clumsy.
