College was free in California when I was a kid.

New York’s state university system didn’t charge tuition when I was a student, but there was room/board/books/fees to be paid. Still, a deal.

Community college used to be free in Arizona and the Universities were very inexpensive.

The theory was to make college as cheap as possible to allow as many qualified students to attend as possible , but to make it as academically difficult in order to to weed out students who were not qualified or serious.

The system worked well.

Now all the money that used to go to things like subsidized low cost education, infrastructure building and repair and community development, is going to support the idle layabouts in the welfare system.

Students are now paying much higher prices for education because the high cost of socialism crowds out other spending priorities

The difference was everyone knew it was paid for by taxes, it was only for Community College, you and your parents had to be citizens, and lastly there was no expectations that every student must go to college because people were taught that the world needed more tradesmen and ditch diggers than ancient LBGT art history majors.

College has been free in Georgia for years as long as you keep your grades up. The Hope Scholarship is funded by our lottery and pays in-state tuition for students who maintain a 3.2 GPA. It used to be 3.0 and covered books and fees, but no longer. And it's not income qualified. 😊

I seem to remember Reagan made the first two years of college free when he was governor.
