BERLIN (Reuters) - Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday Donald Trump must be shown appropriate respect for holding the office of the U.S. president, even if she may differ with him on policy issues.
Merkel, campaigning for a fourth term in office after a Sept. 24 national election, has refused to bend to pressure from her Social Democrat (SPD) rivals to resist demands by Trump for NATO members to increase their defense spending.
As a committed Atlanticist, she has stressed the strength of German relations with the United States even when flagging differences in opinion on policy.
"If you take the president of the United States, whatever differences of opinion there may be, I know he prevailed in a tough election. It wasn't reserved for him on a silver platter," she told business daily Handelsblatt in an interview.
"In the end, he won the election under American electoral law and that means he is democratically elected and that this person should be shown the appropriate respect, regardless of how I assess his views," she added.....

Unlike Germany that throws people in prison for wrong-think
Her German political rivals.
Irrelevant condescension
So the German people care that our President is Donald Trump?
That’s mighty big of her.
Wonder what she wants from Trump.
It’s the last month before the German election, and she’s now got the guaranteed win.
If you go and ask working-class Germans to rate issues...the anti-Trump agenda is likely problem number 300 for the average guy. It doesn’t fit on the German news media listing....even though they’ve tried to make it a topic every single night for the first six months of the administration. The general public in Germany have moved on.
And if you were asking for topic number one in Germany? It’s the topic that no political figure wants to talk on (and it’s NOT immigration)....it’s the diesel car crisis.
This is how much I trust Merkel:
That's exactly what I was thinking. She must want something.
Good for her. In spite of her stance on emigration, etc., the woman knows history and senses that bad people are trying to bring about a disastrous coup of the American President because they want absolute power over the American people. Merkel knows that would also be disastrous for the world, including Germany. I wonder whether Freepers out there sense, as I do a change in the “swamp wind,” against President Trump. This a.m. I read in Drudge that the Wall Street Journal editor has let their journalists knows that biased commentary on the news is not appropriate and that they should seek employment elsewhere if they want to use personal bias to go after this President. FINALLY, a respected person from the world of journalism is standing up to be counted. In addition, the loud and constant Russian thing seems to have settled remarkably the past couple of weeks, and, why has FOXNEWS suddenly rebounded to almost previous levels? Could it be that America does not want an Orwellian nation where people are told by the media and government to accept that 2+2=5, and, further not to question it so that they can set reality to whatever they want? I hope and pray that honest, influential people will step to the plate from all parties and all professions to stop the insanity. It must stop because, otherwise, the fake news, the fake racism, and the other “fakeness” going on is worse than aggressive cancer and, if allowed to continue, will kill all of the dreams of humanity and the hopes of attaining a higher and more humane society.
What’re you angling at.......Angle-uh?
Leftists alert! Watch your wallet.
It sounds like it was in response to a question. I don't think Trump is overly popular in Germany.
What does she want from Trump/US?
Just got back from a trip to Europe, and yes they are very much aware. Also, at least to the few I spoke to, support him. People may not like him personally, but they know he’s speaking the truth...especially about securing the borders and stopping rampant, unfettered immigration. Just like the U.S....flyover country, if it exists in Europe, wants a strong U.S. It’s good for security and it’s good for the world economy.

Markel seems to be hinting that one choice was the silver platter candidate and she lost, so you have to live with what the Americans elected since they rejected the silver platter.
That’s really all we ask, from Eurostan and from our own Progs.
Either that or she’s worried about American tourism and business.
Her statement is insulting. She should show respect by her behavior. I believe the translation was imprecise. What she really said is closer to
As difficult as it is to imagine, we have to take the trouble to pretend to respect Trump in order to keep up sales of grotesquely overpriced cars and to keep the Russians from taking shits in our cupboards, and raping even more girls than the Muslims.
Germans......
