Egypt cancels Kushner meeting with minister after denial of aid

Egypt called off a scheduled meeting between its foreign minister and top U.S. presidential adviser Jared Kushner on Wednesday after the United States decided to withhold millions of dollars in aid.

But President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi would meet the U.S. delegation led by Kushner later in the day as scheduled, Sisi's office said.

Two U.S. sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Tuesday that Washington had decided to deny Egypt $95.7 million in aid and to delay a further $195 million because of its failure to make progress on respecting human rights and democratic norms.

“This is twisting the truth”

How so? l’m only asking because I wasn’t aware that the US has issues with human rights in Egypt. In fact, Trump has been making it a point to say that the US would not be trying to impose its values on Middle Eastern countries.

The total aid package is 1.3 or 1.6 billion. We are TEMPORARILY withholding only a percentage.

Misleading headline. The attempt is to make those who just scan the headlines think that Trump screwed up and can’t handle foreign policy. In the text it says a meeting still took place.

It was part of the Camp David accord from 1978 (Carter). We agreed to send massive amounts of aid to Egypt if they'd stop shooting at the Israelis ...

I give less than a rat fart about human rights and democractic norms in Egypt so long as they are an ally of our allies and help us smoke out and exterminate our domestic Muslim Brotherhood cockroaches.

Ever hear of the Camp David Accords? Aid to Egypt was part of the reason why they signed them. Call it an incentive, bribe, etc. but we have been giving Egypt, along with Israel, the lion's share of our aid leaving aside the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The globalist US State Department and globalist Tillerson say Egypt is being mean to their beloved muslim brotherhood.

This sounds like obama state department idiocy from the group that tried to put the muslim brotherhood in control of Egypt

Have they withheld aid from Turkey or Ukraine? From Palestinians?
Bastions of human rights

$1 Billion a Year in Military Aid to Egypt for 40 Years: Just Keep Giving?

Egypt has received more than $57 billion in U.S. military aid since 1946, making it the third-largest recipient of military aid in the past 66 years — after Israel ($123 billion) and Vietnam ($74.8 billion). Since the Camp David Accords in 1979, the United States has sent Cairo more than $1 billion annually in military aid, much of it because Egypt was seen as a lynchpin to peace in the Middle East.

As I said on another thread, this sounds to me like State Department mischief. Al Sisi is going after Muslim Brotherhood. He overthrew their government, which earned him the enmity of McCain, Graham, and Obama, and evidently the enmity of State as well.

Tillerson has turned out to be a disappointment; I haven’t seen any evidence that he is draining that swamp.

Tillerson has endorsed the Council on Foreign Relations several times. His Exxon Corporation is a major sponsor of the CFR. Tillerson is a Swamp denizen.

That said, I certainly believe that if the Trump Revolution is to succeed, it will need the help of some Swamp denizens who turn on their masters.

Amen. If they put into place so called democratic reforms their goose is cooked. No more nation building.

Let’s see how the Tillerson-McMaster plans are going?

We’re going to drive Pakistan further into China’s hands because, so we say, “we don’t want to do national building in Afghanistan” but want to put onus for peace their on Pakistan.

Now, we are going to apply Obama’s rules for the Middle East - go after the “dictators” with bad “civil rights records” - well, all but the dictators in Saudi Arabia that is. And when Egypt has been fed up with U.S. pressure in the past, whom did they run off to improve relations with? Russia. And where is Russia now? Just a few hundred miles north - in Damascus.

Gee, in two days, Trump-Tillerson-McMaster has managed to get two important nations heading to embrace our two biggest foreign geopolitical opponents. Good work.
