Taking the pulse of Trump’s Afghanistan strategy among Washington’s mainstream media, Mike Allen, the co-founder of both Politico and Axios media, determined that the war will remain a stalemate under the president’s plan.
“The plan will have the U.S. not winning, but not losing,” he wrote.
U.S. Gen. John Nicholson, the top commander of American and NATO forces in Afghanistan, told Congress in February that the coalition has been facing a “stalemate” in the war-ravaged country for years.
Echoing the top U.S. general, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), an American watchdog agency, at the end of last month also described the current situation in the war-ravaged country as a “stalemate.”
Citing the U.S. forces in Afghanistan, SIGAR noted that “as of May 15, 2017, the struggle between the Afghan government and insurgents remains a stalemate.”
The United States has been fighting the war in Afghanistan since October 2001 at a significant cost of blood and treasure — an estimated $714 billion as well as 2,257 U.S. service members killed and 20,257 others injured.
Despite the U.S. taxpayer investment in Afghanistan over nearly 16 years, the Taliban is stronger, al-Qaeda continues to operate in the country, and the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) has established a presence.
Security conditions significantly deteriorated after former President Barack Obama declared the U.S. combat mission in Afghanistan over at the end of 2014, a move that fueled a Taliban resurgence.

Can you say Vietnam 2.0???
Have to admit this is an extremely disappointing decision.
The most important part(s) of Trump’s plan will be what he can’t say.
What is our stated objective in Afghanistan?
What’s he going to say, let’s withdraw completely? I think you’ll see a different fight.
If the plan is, indeed, to increase troop levels, Trump has some ‘splainin’ to do tonight.
At the beginning or now?
Please explain why Breitbart is sourcing stories from fake news politico and axios?
The plan will have the U.S. not winning, but not losing,
Wrong. This was Obama’s plan. Just as in Iraq, when adults take over the Afghanistan theatre, we will win.
Rule one in Hand Wringing 101:
1. Wait until the president lays the policy out, and explains why he has chosen this policy.
Oh you mean the fact that we are continue to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results?
That’s called insanity.
I'm not sure why anyone would keep reading after this point. Perhaps the next quote was from President Kim of North Korea.
Betsy Devos brother Erik Prince was disinvited to the meeting after Bannon got axed. I don’t know if his plan was the solution
You can’t win in Afghanistan.Russia showed us that. We should know it by now.
someone is giving Axios information. I have seen it multiple times.
So if they are right about this announcement will you start to watch what they are saying?
Probably not.
A question no one can or WILL answer.
Stop/slow down poppy production or increase it? Pay off the Taliban or starve them? Demoralize our troops more or increase their strength through realistic ROE’s??
Lot’s of opinions, few facts.
How will increasing troops in that s###hole make america great again?
Erik Prince on Afghanistan Strategy: Why Would More Troops and More Money Work After 16 Years?

Nobody wins in Afghanistan.
Alexander the Great couldn’t conquer it 2350 years ago, Genghis Khan gave up, the Brits gave up, the Russian’s gave up. It’s not worth the effort and the Afghanis don’t anyone there. We should cut our losses, kill as many Taliban as is possible as a punitive act, and then just abandon it.
I see you like the never ending state of war.
We originally went into Afghanistan to get Osama Bin Laden. He is dead, and we are still in a state of war over there.
Do you want the United State to take over Afghanistan?
Do you know that country is known for where Empires die for never ending wars.
So how many years do you want to see Patriot Americans die over there? How many Trillions of Dollars do you want to send to Afghanistan?
What another 15 years?
How about 50 more years?
How about a 100 more years?
To get Bin Laden. Who was living quite comfortably in our "ally" Pakistan's territory.
President Trump inherited an impossible mess. Obama had the perfect opportunity to leave when Bin Laden was killed "mission accomplished" and all that.
Since that didn't happen, what can one conclude? Somebody must be profiting handsomely for the war (the contractors?) and Afghanistan must have resources we want.
If there were a way to do it, I'd be all for giving it back to the Taliban and let them kill ISIS influences.....and keep the nutcases out of the US.
Just my silly opinion.
