Americans stake out prime viewing spots to watch the eclipse (LIVE THREAD)
AP News ^ | August 21, 2017 | Marcia Dunn

Americans with telescopes, cameras and protective glasses staked out viewing spots along a narrow corridor from Oregon to South Carolina to watch the moon blot out the midday sun for a magical couple of minutes Monday in what promised to be the most observed and photographed eclipse in history.

Sky-watchers everywhere — and millions were expected to peer into the sun — set out lawn chairs and blankets and awaited the first total solar eclipse to sweep coast-to-coast across the U.S. in practically a century. Astronomers were giddy with excitement.

Jim Todd, a director at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, warmed up the crowd at an amphitheater in Salem, Oregon.

“The world is watching us, folks, because we are going to get the first, best show and the weather is gorgeous,” Todd said. “The weather forecast is crystal clear throughout the state.”

David Avison showed up in Salem before dawn with his wife and relatives, after traveling by car and overnight train from their suburban Portland home. They couldn’t get reservations at a nearby resort, despite making plans six years ago.

“I’m telling people if you want to see the one in 2024, you’d better make your reservations now,” Avison said.

With 200 million people within a day’s drive of Monday’s path of totality, towns and parks braced for monumental crowds. Clear skies beckoned along most of the route, to the relief of those who feared cloud cover would spoil this once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Our Pastor from Calvary
Chapel Chino Hills yesterday said it is
bad theology and not Biblical at all
to attach certain meanings to eclipses, etc.
So many did though... sigh.

we are in the 90% coverage area....it got a bit shadowy but definitely still pretty bright out...

totality was only a few hundred miles south of us, and if it wasn't for my work I'd have gone...

in 2024 I hope to be in the PA area for the next total eclipse this time without having to use my husband's welding helmet...

Also, as the illumination reached its lowest level, I pointed at the Sun/Moon and told all the women at the golf club; “Look, Look! Now you can see the lunar landers the astronauts left on the Moon back in the 60s and 70s.

Most believed me and said they could see them too!

...”So many did though... sigh”..

If they did then your pastor’s message isn’t reaching them sufficient for their superstitions to change. And the will to isn’t there among the people who did that.

I think you have to have 14 or above for the welding helmet...ours did not have a rating...

I read that the number listed is actually only for the darkness of the shield, not the ability to block out dangerous rays...

so we used ours, rating unknown, but we also put on regular sunglasses and only sneaked a peak...

the homemade eclipse box did not seem to really work...

“YOU WILL GO BLIND! BLIND! BLIND!!!!”

I thought young boys going blind was only from that “self abuse” thing in the Boy Scout handbook.

Luckily where I am will have totality for the 2024 eclipse as well. I hope I’m around to see it.

The difference between partial and total is like night and day. Even when the slightest sliver of the sun was visible, it was still clearly daytime (although darker and yellower than normal). But as soon as totality began it was night. Not pitch-black night, but dark enough that the stars and planets were visible, the cicadas started making noise and the sight of white corona of the sun surrounding the black disk of the moon was really spectacular. Had two minutes, seven seconds here and it passed too quickly.

The Mayan calender rock ran out of room for their Venus double eclipse starting point. Kind of like our calender restarts after Dec 31.

Same year that Miggy will eclipse his career (if he can make it that long).

Genesis 1:31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Well, a little anticlimactic here in northern Colorado, where we got about 93%. Thought it would get a little darker. Definitely noticeable, though.

Same here in middle Missouri, 92.7%, I expected it to get dark but it wasn't much more than an overcast day. I could tell a difference but not near what I saw would happen in my area per the website I checked.

Well, a BIG nothing in Central Florida! Except.... At the moment of what was supposed to have been the total eclipse, and like I said, nothing, the cicadas and birds stopped making noises. Was somewhat weird!

It was/is! I was told to do it just until I needed glasses!
