INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- IMPD has arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly vandalizing the Confederate monument in Garfield Park.
According to authorities, Anthony Ventura was arrested at around noon in the 2400 block of Shelby Street following the alleged incident.
After a video started making the rounds on social media, folks in the area, like Rex Staples, came out to see the damage.
"It's stupid, it don’t really make any sense, you know?" said Staples, " because they’re really not doing anything.”
Following an Indianapolis Star article earlier this week, some city leaders have called for a discussion on whether the monument’s current spot is really the best place for it.
The memorial honors around 1,600 Confederate soldiers and sailors who died while POWs at Camp Morton in Indianapolis during the Civil War. The remains of those soldiers are actually buried at Crown Hill Cemetery.
There's no word yet on how much damage was caused during the incident Saturday afternoon.

Hear that McPain? You are obviously a lib posing as a Republican "representative".
A thirty year old man who is not working has time to deface statues.
Looks like Charles Manson wanna be!!
The media smiles as they see how easily millions are turned into programmed attacking machines, hitting whatever targets they are told to hit by the MSM. This guy had been around this monument for 3 years and never cared. Now, in a few short weeks of programming, he is attacking it.
I really don’t get these a$$clowns; by the time I was 30, I was 12yrs into my military career already. Just can’t get my head around their though process or how they make a living. Bet he still lives in his parents basement.
Statues are an apt metaphor for the breakdown of society.
A statue is a large, heavy thing that requires a strong base or plinth.
A sane existence requires the same base or it becomes unstable. The constant chipping away at normality, morality, Christianity (or at least spirituality), logic, rationality, etc. can leave people teetering on the brink of insanity, especially those already disposed to mental illness.
This is the dark side of the social media age: persons who lack utterly any redeeming qualities who nevertheless want notoriety and some bizarre form of approbation (see also: transgenderism).
Again, I have to ask; why is there a confederate statue in Indiana? Were there a number of volunteers to the CSA from that state? If so, is it safe to assume they were Democrats? Were Democrat Klansmen later responsible for establishing this statue on Indiana soil?
Because:
“The memorial honors around 1,600 Confederate soldiers and sailors who died while POWs at Camp Morton in Indianapolis during the Civil War. The remains of those soldiers are actually buried at Crown Hill Cemetery.”
Wow, the stupid dude got himself caught in the act on video, doing the deed! He has no excuse for not getting himself a construction job, considering the gusto with which he was swinging that hammer.
Lol at that picture. He fell down the Crazy Tree, and hit every branch.
They were Southern troops who died as pows in the pow camp in Indiana. 1600 of them, I guess the North treated them no better than the South treated their prisoners.
The resource strapped South neglected their prisoners, the North abused theirs.
The Latin word for peace “PAX” is prominent on the memorial.
What a maroon.
Can’t even let the dead be honored, who died while POWs and not combatants.
Sounds somewhat like a Naked Gun movie...
“The remains of those soldiers are actually buried at Crown Hill Cemetery”
Is Garfield park the actual POW camp site?
This is the first article I have read on a statue toppling or destruction that actually discusses why the statue is in place. The Baltimore statue that was destroyed last week and in the following article did not explain anything concerning the statue placement other than it was a confederate statue.
There is another statue that I am keeping aware of and it is located in Washington DC and it is a statue of an army infantryman with a rifle in hand and outfitted in the gear used during the Spanish-American War. I’m wondering when (if this trend continues to escalate), the statue will be toppled my mistake.
Camp Morton was regarded as one of the best CW POW camps. Former southern prisoners eventually erected a statue in commemoration of Gov. Morton, to whom they gave much of the credit.
I wonder if he goes by “ASS” Ventura? Tell me you wouldn’t cross the street if you saw that coming towards you.
