As more and more statues of Confederate leaders come down across the United States, country music legend Charlie Daniels is speaking out about the movement likening it to ISIS demolition of historical sites in the Middle East.
Thats what ISIS is doing, the 80-year-old Country Music Hall of Famer explained during an interview with cable network Newsmax TV on Wednesday. There were pieces of history over there they didnt like and they were taking them down.
Where does it go to? Where does it stop? Daniels asked host Rita Cosby. Is it going to be Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson or are we headed into Jefferson, Washington, who were both slave owners? How deep into history are we going to go? Everybody that we disagree with, [are] we going to have to wipe every semblance of them out? Is that what thisll all be about? Is that what this is, is that where its going to go?
His comments seem to echo those of president Donald Trump, who condemned the removal of memorials dedicated to Confederate leaders in the Civil War on Twitter Thursday.
Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments, the 71-year-old former Celebrity Apprentice host tweeted. You cant change history, but you can learn from it. Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson whos next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish!
Trump continued, Also the beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced!
Daniels the Southern-rocker known for his no. 1 hit The Devil Went Down to Georgia had similar concerns and argued that Americans didnt need to agree with the politics of the figures involved.
You dont have to condone what happened in the Civil War. We all know what it was fought for. But they are statues of people that are a part of our history, he said. There are people who were part of our history who were not very savory characters. But Robert E. Lee, for instance, was one of the most honorable people in our history.
If you dont like it, dont look at it, he added. I walk past movie posters I dont like. Theres all kinds of symbolism in this country that I dont like, but Im not going to go tear them down. I just dont look at them. Theyre not standing there talking. These statues arent preaching or shouting out some kind of crazy epithets or something. Theyre just sitting there. So just turn around and dont look at them.
Fans of Daniels will be familiar with his outspoken political views. The media and opportunists act as if the two factions in Charlottesville represent the attitudes of the whole country, he tweeted on Thursday of Saturdays headline-making protests by white-supremacist groups in Charlottesville, Virginia that left one dead. Believe me, it doesnt.
After Thursdays terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain in which a van barreled into the citys popular Las Ramblas tourist district, killing 13 people and injuring 100 more Daniels tweeted, Did a hell of a lot of good for Spain to cave in to the terrorists when they blew up that train a few years ago.
Meanwhile, in the aftermath of Saturdays tragedy, the city of Baltimore voted to remove a statue of Chief Justice Roger Taney the author of the Dred Scott decision that upheld slavery and helped precipitate the Civil War. Officials also quietly removed four confederate monuments throughout the Maryland city on Tuesday night, CBS Baltimore reported.
Communists do it too.
Absolutely. Must be stopped.
He’s right, it is similar. It’s not exactly the same, because these aren’t ancient, irreplaceable monuments, but it’s quite similar.
Spot on, Charlie
Childish way over the top group madness
Wake up America
Signs of the time
True.
Trying to find article by black woman who acknowledged antifa was also to blame. Saw it on newsfeed but tablet crashed so had to reboot and can’t remember correct title to search.
Charlie is 100% Right......no matter how hard the left tries they can not change history...
sounds like the radical 60’s and 70’s when the Communists influenced and financed the protestors burning government buildings, killing police, seeking to violently overthrow the government. Remember the Weathermen, SDS, Black Panthers, etc.?
That’s true, but if enough people believe in a false “history,” that’s very damaging. Reality bites whether we acknowledge reality or not, whether people are intentionally deceptive or sincerely in error.
It's not "like" what ISIS is doing... It IS what ISIS is doing... Americans better wake up and realize that these people who want to destroy our history are our mortal enemies and need to be dealt with accordingly.....
However, we shouldn't be trying to wipe out our past. Even the parts we don't like must be remembered, if for no other reason than as a reminder of what should never be allowed tp happen again.
The Germans understand this. We should too.
The left is trying to erase the past, and they are ignoring the axiom that “those that forget the past are doomed to repeat it.”
Charlie, I do agree with your statement...SPOT ON!!
What they’re trying to erase is THEIR past. The Confederacy was a Democrat temper tantrum that cost hundreds of thousands of Americans their lives.
This whole thing has nothing to do with slavery, KKK, White Supremacist, neo-nazis.
This is about the radical elements within this country attempting to fundamentally change this nation into a social state.
The whole racial/Confederate thing is the vehicle in which they latch on to in an effort to further their cause.
Charlie is right. And it’s against the law with a 10-year prison sentence if convicted. I’ve posted this before and will do so again:
Here is what congress has said:
Confederate soldiers, sailors, and Marines that fought in the Civil war were made U.S. Veterans by an act of Congress in in 1957, U.S. Public Law 85-425, Sec 410, Approved 23 May, 1958. This made all Confederate Army/ Navy/ Marine Veterans equal to U.S. Veterans. Additionally, under U.S. Public Law 810, Approved by the 17th Congress on 26 Feb 1929 the War Department was directed to erect headstones and recognize Confederate grave sites as U.S. War dead grave sites. Just for the record the last Confederate veteran died in 1958. When you remove a Confederate statue, monument or headstone, you are in fact, removing a statue, monument or head stone of a U.S. VETERAN.
18 U.S. Code § 1369 - Destruction of veterans memorials (a) Whoever, in a circumstance described in subsection (b), willfully injures or destroys, or attempts to injure or destroy, any structure, plaque, statue, or other monument on public property commemorating the service of any person or persons in the armed forces of the United States shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than 10 years, or both. (b) A circumstance described in this subsection is that (1) in committing the offense described in subsection (a), the defendant travels or causes another to travel in interstate or foreign commerce, or uses the mail or an instrumentality of interstate or foreign commerce; or (2) the structure, plaque, statue, or other monument described in subsection (a) is located on property owned by, or under the jurisdiction of, the Federal Government.
As someone else said, “They are just making room for the new Trump statues.”
