A little playing with the Left’s head on this private joke. Back in 1969, Dick Gregory formed a black/white liberal coalition that was protesting the inauguration of Pres. Nixon.

Gregory wanted lots of black and white leftists to come to DC and proclaim him “president” and literally or figuratively take of the “White House” through protests, and then change its’ name to “The Black House”.

One of his top DC supporters was an afro-wearing white Jewish woman named Jane Silverman (don’t think she was a commie, just a black wannabe). She somewhat claimed to be one of his liaison people in DC and she showed up in some anti-Vietnam protest groups run by the Communist Party in DC.

One of her friends in DC was a smelly old really nasty Commie named Helen Gurewitz, reportedly the first wife of Soviet spy Morton Sobell (who later married another CP red named Helen). Gurewitz would have made a great guard and torturer at Auschwitz. Her husband was Casey Gurewitz, another DC CPer and their son Don became a leader of the Trotskyite “Socialist Workers Party”. Don was a nasty piece of work too, just like his mother.

Helen Gurewitz was a friend of Rep. Ron Dellums (D-CA) communist member of Congress. They participated on the stage platform together in the Feb. 1971 SWP front conference of the “Student Mobilization Committee Against the War in Vietnam” (a wholly SWP and Young Socialist Alliance operation).

Dick Gregory was almost a “Lenny Bruce” type comedian but I thought he was much funnier and not as nasty. However, over time he became a black nationalist and never came back to being a moderate. Now that was a shame because the black Americans needed spokesmen who were not ideological but sensible, pragmatic, and honorable citizens such as was the late Whitney Young.

I never wished bad things for Dick Gregory. I felt sorry for him because he chose the wrong path to tread and he betrayed his “people” and their cause for a better life.
He “coulda been a contender”.
