On August 21, the moon's shadow will block the sun from view in a total solar eclipse.

Wherever you are in the United States, you're going to want to look up, and that's OK. Every astronomer in the country will tell you to enjoy this rare opportunity. No matter what superstitions you've heard, there is no risk to your health due to simply being outside during a total solar eclipse.

But there's one thing you shouldn't do, and that's look at the sun with your naked eye.

Don't do it. Really.

The only time you can look at the sun with your naked eye is A) if you're in the path of totality, where the sun will be completely covered by the moon, and B) during those two minutes or less when the sun is completely covered.

Not bad news for me; I don’t care. We plan to be indoors with blinds partially shut. Have enough eye problems moving toward age 70. We’ll check it out on TV.

You can look at the sun directly with the naked eye, of course not for long, but an eclipse certainly is much safer. There is a reason God gave us pain: Looking at the sun creates what? PAIN and we look away and that prevents eye damage unless you were kidnapped by Obamas heroes, the ISIS of South America, MS-13 and they tied you to stakes and sewed your eyelids open, then you would have a problem looking at the sun.

They say that binocoulars or telescopes will magnify the sunlight, harming your eyes. Is this true? Even with you wearing the eye protection code glasses.

Nah, it’ll be alright.

Looking at the sun with binoculars or a telescope, WITHOUT a shade 14 or higher filter over the lenses on the SUN SIDE of the binoculars or telescope will make them act much like you were burning ants with a magnifying glass.

Those cool solar shades you’re wearing will melt right through, just like that.

Steaming eyeballs anyone?
