I always thought a tank should have wheels instead of tracks...definitely moving in that direction.

A much better solution for MOUT than an MBT ...provided the armor can withstand the latest shoulder-fired rockets.

Never gonna happen.

Track has substantially lower ground pressure than tires. It doesn’t matter how many wheels you put under it, you’d never get a 130,000-lb wheeled vehicle that would be as mobile in mud or deep sand as an M1 tank. Not to mention all bridges have a max vehicle weight capacity, and tracked vehicles always have the highest rating.

Tracks also give better stability across rough terrain (a good thing for a gun platform) because the tracks form a sort of a moving suspension bridge between the peaks. Less jouncy ride. More steel (or DU) on target.

But I’d ‘druther change a two flatted tires than repair one broken track, any day of the week.
