The latest European terrorist attack - by Barcelone wolves - hit a country that made a conscious choice thirteen years ago to opt for a quiet life. So much for that. One of the psychological changes that has happened since the Madrid bombings of 2004 is that Spaniards and other Europeans now accept, albeit mostly implicitly, that this is less to do with foreign policy, or foreign soldiering, than with domestic matters, such as immigration and multiculturalism.
I'll have more to say on this subject with Tucker Carlson live on Fox News on Friday evening at 8pm Eastern/5pm Pacific. Meanwhile, here is what I wrote about the Madrid attacks in my bestseller America Alone: The End of the World As We Know It. I think most of it holds up. The mourners in the streets marched under placards bearing the single word "Basta" - "Enough". They didn't mean "enough" terrorism, but "enough" with Bush's wars and being a fully participating member of the "coalition of the willing". So the Spaniards caved, folded, walked away - and, as they learned today, for the Islamic supremacists it still wasn't "enough":

An excellent article.
Thanks for posting.
As usual, Mark Steyn hits the nail on the head.
Too true. The even greater irony, of course, is that Catalonia has more Muslims than any other part of Spain, welcomes them, Barcelona has one of the biggest new mosques in Europe, and there are some towns there where you’d think you were in Morocco - one of them being Manresa, that formerly Christian town where St. Ignatius spent his time.
And that still didn’t buy them protection.
The attack was staged where it was because they wanted to kill a lot of tourists, since Barcelona makes a huge part of its living on tourism, and if that dries up because foreigners are scared, they’ll be in big trouble.
Catalonia is very leftist and the leftist “indepentistas” have drummed up hatred of the rest of Spain to the point of insanity. One thing the region should remember is that, by itself, it has no army - the military support comes from the rest of Spain, and they may need it sometime in the future. Unless they all want to wear burkas very, very soon.
Burka’s will soon be mandatory on Ibiza.
Every American ought to read America Alone. Unfortunately, my two grown children couldn’t finish it. I admit Steyn’s style of satire mixed with closely reasoned argument isn’t for everyone, but it’s worth the effort.
