Andrew Young Says More Important Issues Than Taking Down Confederate Symbols

A civil rights leader says there are more important causes than taking down Confederate statues.

Former Atlanta Mayor and UN Ambassador Andrew Young said fighting to have the Georgia Confederate flag replaced may have been a mistake.

“I think it’s too costly to refight the Civil War,” Young said Wednesday at a news conference in which he and fellow civil rights icon C.T. Vivian endorsed Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell to succeed Kasim Reed as the city’s next mayor.

Young said civil rights leaders should have spent more time fighting for issues such as education and housing.

The Georgia flag became an issue in 1992, just before the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta when officials did not want the state to be seen as a haven for racism.

"We made a mistake here over fighting over the Confederate flag here in Georgia," Young said.

He said the flag fight cost the state $25 billion in jobs and economic impact.

He said flags and statues are just symbols.

"So I'm always interested in substance over symbols and if the truth be known, we've had as much glory and agony under the United States flag," Young said.

He had a message on how to win the fight against Neo-Nazis and white supremacists.

"Their white supremacy is their sickness. You don't get mad, get smart. Never get angry at sick people because you catch their sickness," Young said.&

Young said he wasn't surprised by President Donald Trump's recent comments that the alt-right and alt-left are equally at fault for recent violence.

He said only two presidents have understood civil rights.

"We have never had leadership from the White House in any presidency, except Jimmy Carter and Lyndon Johnson," he said.

Young said non-violent protests are what changed this country and can change it again.

"We have had a non-violent struggle, as Martin Luther King said, to redeem the soul of America from the triple evils: race, poverty and war.

Young said there's a reason Atlanta hasn't seen the type of violence seen in other parts of the United States. He said there's truth to the old adage, "Atlanta is the city too busy to hate."

"You go to any job in the city or building at any time and you will see black and white on any job in the city," he said. "That is the tradition that has thrived here when it's been threatened everywhere else in the world."

Reparations is more important.

Free welfare, free health care, and free phones/stuff didn't improve race relations the past 8 years. It actually got worse than I thought possible. Now what?

“We have never had leadership from the White House in any presidency, except Jimmy Carter and Lyndon Johnson,” he said.

Johnson returned them to bondage, where so many blacks are now completely reliant on others for EVERYTHING. What a sport!

This guy realizes what others did when Obama was elected: We’ve reached the White House; who do we blame for our shortcomings now?

This guy probably realizes that you have to be a total ‘effing loser to think a statue of some white guy who died more than a century ago has any bearing on your life today. I know it’s fashionable for liberals to think the Confederacy is to blame for all the quasi-humanoid mutants shooting each other in places like Chicago, Detroit and Baltimore, but that’s just because they can’t bring themselves to blame the real culprits.

Young understands this is a political loser in the South. It will marginalize the Dems even more.

""We have never had leadership from the White House in any presidency, except Jimmy Carter and Lyndon Johnson," he said."

Yeah, Carter who ran a racist campaign in 1970 for Governor, criticizing ex-Gov. Carl Sanders for "shaking hands with niggers" and LBJ who supported Civil Rights solely because "it will have those niggers voting Democrat for the next 200 years." Real leadership, Mr. Young.

Charlottesville was essentially a media event. Notice how they close crop the photos because a wide view would show there were few white nationalists there. probably talking about 80-90 out of a nation of 330 million. Then the media blows it up from there to create a groundswell among the professionally aggrieved to fashion a storyline to roll out nationally that the nation is aflame with white racism.
And in the end after all the railing against flags and pulling down of confederate monuments, there is not one less drug addict, not one less impoverished illegitimate baby, not one less jobless person, not one less violent crime committed in that aggrieved community. Perhaps the problem lies within and a little more introspection can lead to a solution rather than CNN’s commercial need to create entertaining news.

“..fighting to have the Georgia Confederate flag replaced may have been a mistake. ...”

You bet your ass it was a mistake, Andrew... That flag is important to people, and the more you p*ss in peoples’ faces about it, the more they’re going to look for the chance to p*ss back.

Aside from the fact that it’s part of OUR history, there’s also the fact that people alive today have family members who died for it - as others died for the Union flag as well.

We will not let our history be erased so easily.

He's old. He doesn't get it. They are not civil rights leaders they are anarcho-communists and they don't care about civil rights or race they want to bring America down.

The Dems are getting in the low 30% from whites in elections in the South. They will lose even more of the white vote with these actions.
