Gettysburg Park hasn't received complaints about Confederate monuments, won't remove any statues

As officials across the country examine whether to display Confederate monuments in U.S. cities, the area park dedicated to one of the most noteworthy Civil War battles has no plans to remove anything memorializing Confederates.

In the wake of white supremacist rally and ensuing violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, Gettysburg National Military Park has not received any new complaints about its Confederate monuments at the park, said spokeswoman Katie Lawhon.

More than 1,300 monuments, markers and plaques are housed at the park to memorialize the historic battle, including a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and a Confederate flag on display in the museum. The park maintains that the memorials are important to the cultural landscape and has no plans to remove any monuments or statues.

"The National Park Service is committed to safe guarding these unique and site-specific memorials in perpetuity, while simultaneously interpreting holistically and objectively the actions, motivations, and causes of the soldiers and states they commemorate," states policy from the U.S. National Parks Service.

‘soft heavy hollow piece of lead that expands upon impact, especially with bone.’

and low velocity as well, not passing through the body, but tumbling inside it, ensuring the maximum internal organ and bone damage...though, obviously, it’s no fun to be shot by any type of projectile...

When folks start breaking the law, that’s a different kettle of fish.

Yeah. I just saw the video of those pukes tearing down the statue in Durham, then spitting on it and kicking it.

And my first thought was “where the hell were the police”? Do they actually do ANYTHING in this country to stop the left... EVER? First they let our people get beat up during the campaign, then they bailed out in Charlottesville (”when the going gets tough, the tough get doughnuts,” I guess), now they just stand by with their thumbs up their asses watching thugs destroy public property. WTH...?

‘The Taliban Left will inevitably try to “clean up” the history at Gettysburg.’

at some point in the future, textbooks will address this era something like this...’Federal troops in the 1860’s did battle for four years, against unknown foes and for unknown reasons...’

Pennlive thinks “has no plans” is news?

This is, in fact, their call for future “demands” and action.

I wonder about the family cemetery that was donated to a local government as a historical site where two sons fought on opposite sides and one of the sons has a confederate flag on his grave marker.

Will they chip it off the gravestone? exhume the body?

I remember when I was very young reading in the paper about this and how our history was very complicated; story was about the donation somewhere in Ohio or West Virginia around 1979.

I’ve molded them using lee molds for my .54 caliber TC Renegade. Extremely accurate and hard hitting for black powder and replica BP

As for folks who possibly decide to come my way at me to cram Marxist/Islamic philosophies, forcefully, down my throat..... I have more modern ordnance that will give me faster reloads and flatter trajectory at range.

Me too. This nonsense has gone on long enough.
And I’m not sure what the `anti-fa’ fascists/anarchists are bitching about.

anarchy [an-er-kee] noun
1. a state of society without government or law.
2. political and social disorder due to the absence of governmental control:
The death of the king was followed by a year of anarchy.
Synonyms: lawlessness, disruption, turmoil.

They pretty much have what they want now: the ability to wreak havoc with impunity.

IMO, what we see here is closer to Nazism in the early to mid 1930’s than to anarchy, with the leftists (oh the irony, the “anti-fascists”) playing the part of the Nazi Brownshirts, wreaking havoc and physical destruction on those who seek to practice freedom of speech and freedom of assembly.

They have the unmitigated gall to deny this truth, but their goal (the Left) is to silence speech through physical violence and mob intimidation.

Pure and simple.

I will not call them anti-fascist or “antifa”.

I am not going to let them off the hook on this by caving to their terminiology.

They are leftist mob thugs, period.

I don’t watch the news, but I have no doubt, zero, that the MSM is canonizing these leftist thugs as heroes. Am I right?

What I find particularly and completely baffling (as a patriotic American) is that the left wants to completely flush the Civil War down the memory hole.

Why?

As a country, we should be proud of the history of the Civil War, and the fact that we were willing and able to make huge sacrifices in blood and treasure to defeat slavery. Doesn’t mean anyone likes or glorifies the bloodshed and loss of life.

We should be proud that we are composed of people who thought they had to fight what they saw as an oppressive federal government, because it is likely true that far more of them fought for that than those who fought simply to preserve slavery, IMO. We should be proud to have people like that in this country.

And we should be equally proud that this country was composed of men who, once the war was over, were able to stand side by side and move forward. That says much about our country, IMO.

The only reason I can think of that the left wants to destroy all traces of the Civil War is that they are ashamed of their part in slavery. It is like their view on many things (getting rid of guns gets rid of violence; getting rid of SUVs gets rid of Carbon Dioxide emissions...getting rid of the Civil War gets rid of their part in slavery and oppression)

Those men who died under the Confederate Flag, and the flag itself, are as much an integral part of our history and who we are as any man who stormed the beach at Iwo Jima, and the Bars and Stars should be as indelible and as much a part of our history as the Stars and Stripes.

From my recollection, the great majority of the monuments at Gettysburg were set up in honor of Northern units, very few in honor of Southern units.

What I find remarkable is the story of sons that fought on opposite sides could be reconciled to the point of being buried side by side in their family’s cemetery, who are these people that want to pull down the honorable men’s monuments they died under?

People of the time understood that one side one and one lost but we shouldn’t dishonor them in death.

They deserve respect for their sacrifice that lead to nation we have today.

“The Taliban Left will inevitably try to “clean up” the history at Gettysburg.”

And their PC enablers in the GOP will help them.

I have a Confederate ancestor buried where he fell there in Barksdale’s charge through the Peach Orchard.

The Left is already after Washington, Jefferson, and every other founder who owned slaves. People who don’t follow the Left don’t realize how complete their hatred of America is.

Yes and they want O on Rushmore...wonder who they will want removed to make room? That is the problem with this, where does it end?

I had a veteran ask me if I thought they would tear down the Vietnam Wall since the libs have always hated those that fought there. Sad thing is I could not truthfully tell him I didn’t think they would do that.

“Yes and they want O on Rushmore...wonder who they will want removed to make room?”

Two slave owners and a colonial/imperialist.

Rushmore will just be Abe and Barky, with Barky jutting his chin out in his best Mussolini impression.
