I was wondering when they would get to Taney
Fascinating man. Lived through a lot of history
Married sister of Francis Scott Key
Appointed to the Supreme Court by Andrew Jackson to replace Chief Justice John Marshall
First Catholic appointed to the USSC
Swore in Abraham Lincoln at his inauguration
Lincoln and his staff scorned Chief Justice Taney because of Dred Scott decision ( which had actually helped launch a young Illinois State Senator named Abe Lincoln into higher office with his “ House Divided” speech)
Also skirmished with the President over lack of habeas corpus in civil, war detentions and arrests
Taney inherited slaves and property but emanicipated them and paid them lifetime pensions
Died in poverty due to civil war property loss
Died on the day slavery was declared illegal in Maryland
Btw if they remove his statue I’m going to miss going up there and seeing the face of the man who inaugurated Lincoln
I usually leave him a penny :-)
Think of what history the children of Maryland will miss, and the opportunity for intellectual, debate over the legal grounds of the Dred Scott case
Which has some parallels to,discussing the “ rights” and protections of illegal ( undocumented) persons now in Ameruca
Thanks. History isn’t as simple as most would like to believe.
Taneytown will have to be renamed.... hmmmm, what name would make a racist mad....
