North Korea Rebukes Russia’s Denial of Its ICBM Launch

Russia called North Korea’s missile fired on July 4 an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) rather than an ICBM

By Charlotte Gao
August 11, 2017

As The Diplomat asked earlier: why is Russia denying that North Korea successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on July 4, 2017? North Korea is also asking the same question, and is apparently furious about Russia’s denial.

On July 4, North Korea successfully flew an ICBM, the Hwasong-14. The ICBM launch was acknowledged around the world including United States, Japan, and South Korea — but not Russia. Rather than calling the missile an ICBM, Russia insisted that the missile was only an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), based on data collected by Russia’s radar systems.

On August 9, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) — the state news agency of North Korea — hit back. KCNA published an article “Is Russia Sightless or Is It Mimicking the Blind,” written by a researcher of the Institute for International Studies of the DPRK. The article rebuked Russia’s “far-fetched assertion” and demanded Russia to drop its “big power concept.”

In the article, the researcher first explained North Korea’s big success in launching the ICBM, which made “the whole world turn its eyes to [North] Korea with admiration.” However, when “the international community was unanimous in commenting in high terms” on North Korea’s ICBM — even the “empire of evil,” the United States, “dares not deny the fact,” the article noted — Russia is “feigning blind and deaf” and calling the ICBM a “medium-range ballistic rocket with 681 km of height and 732 km of distance. ”

Don't be upset. Next time, launch your missile and land it on Red Square in Moscow. That'll show'em.

Any idea if the LORAL guidance systems for ICBMs that Slick Willie gave the Chinese have made it onto the missiles the Norks have been launching? Another staple of Bill Clinton’s “legacy”.

Russia and North Korea declare 2015 a ‘year of friendship’

“The biggest cause for concern is the growing military alliance between Russia and North Korea, with the two regimes recently announcing plans to conduct a series of joint army, navy and air force exercises this year.”

Russia steps up North Korea support to constrain US

May 17, 2017

“Despite efforts by the United Nations to impose isolating sanctions on North Korea in response to the country’s continued development of nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles, trade between Russia and North Korea soared more than 85 percent in the first four months of the year.”

POTUS has trumped Lil Kim with his direct words to the dictator. If he launches any other missiles at this point he is opening himself to an immediate reaction.

The only country with the assets to have determined whether or not the Norks had launched an “ICBM” is the United States. Anyone else is relying on American sensors.

To determine maximum potential range for ballistic missile it is sufficient to measure time of flight and distance. Alternately, knowing position (or simply altitude) and speed (scalar vs. vector quantity) suffices. The error bounds on the estimate of maximum range are determined by and roughly proportional to error bounds these quantities. The best estimate is arrived at by making multiple measures with different sensors in different locations to arrive at a least squares solution.

Only the U.S. has instrumentation to do this reliably. I am pretty sure that the Norks depend on U.S., Korean and Japanese sources to determine the performance of their missiles. I am also nearly certain that the same three act in concert to supply misinformation to the Norks and the public, but with only the Norks as the intended target.

The Russians are not in a position to know much about the performance of Nork missiles, they are simply acting mischievously, since that seems to be the role that God has assigned to Russia for the past thousand years.

All Kimbo has to do is flip one of his puny missiles in the vicinity of Vladivostok and he’ll find out a thing or two.

If history has taught is anything, the Russians are allies only of Russia. The Russians will ally with other countries only as long as it serves Russian interests. If the Russians perceive a threat from DPRK, Li'l Kim can expect as a minimum a visit from a Spetsnaz unit. As a maximum, well the Ruskies have nukes too.

If Kimchi Un did launch a missile, it would likely hit Russia or China but doubtful it would hit Guam.

I have said since July 4 that it was a 2 stage rocket.

Kim got lucky and got the second stage to light off without it going KABOOM.

The chucklehead has not demonstrated in any way he can make them go where he wants them to go.

He is like a kid using basic math and burn time to shoot an arrow into the air

Why on Earth would NK want to threaten their big brother Russia?

February 3, 2015

“Russia is in discussions to conduct joint military exercises with North Korea and Cuba, a senior Russian military official announced on Saturday.

Valery Gerasimov, the chief of staff of the Russian military, made the announcement on Saturday at a meeting attended by all the top service chiefs as well as the Russian defense minister, Sergey Shoygu.

“We are planning an expansion of the communication lines of our military central command. We are entering preliminary negotiations with the armed forces of Brazil, Vietnam, Cuba and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” Gerasimov said, according to a Newsweek report.

He added: “We are going to conduct a series of joint naval and air force exercises, as well as joint drills of our ground troops and air assault troops.”

Voice of America Korea and Russian news outlets also reported Gerasimov’s comments. ...”

Russia and North Korea have been strengthening ties in recent months, and had previously suggested they’d increase mil-to-mil ties this year. Back in November of last year, Choe Ryong-hae— North Korea’s unofficial number 2— traveled to Moscow as Kim Jong-un’s special envoy, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, among other Russian officials.

In reporting on the trip following Choe’s return, North Korea’s Party-run daily Rodong Sinmun said: “The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing exchange and cooperation in 2015 in the political, economic, and military fields, and others.”

Notably, General No Kwang Chol, vice-chief of the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army, also traveled to Moscow as part of Choe’s delegation. While there, he met with his Russian counterpart, Andrei Kartapolov, and the two military officials had “a wide-ranging exchange of views on putting the friendship and cooperation between the armies of the two countries on a new higher stage,” according to a report by North Korea’s state media.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War 2 when Soviet forces liberated North Korea from Imperial Japan’s brutal occupation. Kim Jong-un is expected to travel to Russia in May to participate in celebrations for Victory Day (the anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany).

Besides military cooperation, Russia also sees North Korea as crucial to its plans to ship natural gas to South Korea via the North.”

The Russians would know a bit about this, as the Nork’s missiles are based off of Russian missiles.
