Emails Show Rahm Used Sanctuary City Issue to Bolster National Image
The Chicago Sun-Times ^ | August 9, 2017 | Fran Spielman

Rahm Emanuel has emphatically denied that politics is behind his decision to file a pre-emptive lawsuit seeking to block U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions from cutting off federal crimefighting funds to sanctuary cities.

If that’s true, why did Emanuel play the media like a fiddle by dribbling out details of the lawsuit over a three-day period?

And why do the mayor’s own private emails expose his attempts to use his pro-immigration stance to shore up a national media image that took a beating after the November 2015 release of video showing a white Chicago Police officer firing 16 shots at black teenager Laquan McDonald?

In a 1996 memo to Clinton — Emanuel called for “record deportations of criminal aliens” and told the president that “halfway through your term you want to claim a number of industries free of illegal immigrants.”

During Emanuel’s days as Barack Obama’s chief of staff, U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez accused Emanuel of standing in the way of immigration reform...

A typical liberal hypocrite. Emanuel is desperate, so now he is pro-sanctuary after being pro-deportation...

A complete fake!

Corrupt, hypocritical, social justice warrior, and mayor of a killing field—the perfect candidate—well, except that he is the wrong skin color and the wrong gender.

Rahm’s national image as a supporter of criminals has been secure for a long time now.

My impression is Democrats have no core values beyond socialism and lining their own pockets. They will sway with the slightest political breeze to garner votes so they can remain in power. How many times did we hear about Hillary’s focus groups? A lot. People with core values don’t need focus groups to pick their path forward. They know what they believe and they act on that.

video showing a white Chicago Police officer firing 16 shots at black teenager

well, I don't know why Rahm wants to polish his 'national' image, but pointing out one shooting by a police officer, when 10 or more people are gunned down by their own kind each and every week, seems a bit hypocritical, and racebaiting.

Is it not Rahm Emanual’s code to never let a crisis go to waste?

So, if liberals can ignore federal immigration laws, can conservative cities ignore abortion laws, i.e., declare themselves to be “Sanctuary Cities” for the preborn?

When this topic comes up it seems everyone forgets about the point 8 alcohol compliance fed highway funding. States that didn’t comply didn’t get the funds.

If a court rules in Emmanuel’s favor a whole bunch of lawyers will be very happy. Thus setting a precedence. Which is why that may happen but shouldn’t.

Rahm is going to burn through taxpayer money for political points while the lawsuit is going to be a dead bang loser. Same as Daley trying to negate the Second Amendment by suing gun manufacturers and gun owners.

What makes Rahm’s lawsuit even more of a joke is that Chicago had not applied for the funds from the Feds. Ergo, the city was not losing anything to begin with.

For Rahm to prevail, a series of older case precedents establishing the right of the Feds to shape public policy by awarding or withholding Federal block grants would have to be overturned.

I should have added a /s to my comment. Not certain which court this suit was filed in. But it sounds like a lower court which will rule in Emmanuel’s favor. From there sets it up for a bunch of suits till it goes to SCOTUS.
