An Iranian drone nearly collided with a U.S. Navy F-18 Super Hornet while the American jet was in a holding pattern, a U.S. defense official told Fox News on Tuesday.
The jet was about to land aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, which recently arrived in the Persian Gulf, according to the report.
The incident marked the first time an Iranian drone has interrupted a flight pattern, the official told Fox News.
The F-18 maneuvered to avoid collision, said the official, who described the unarmed Iranian drone as a Qom-1, and added that the encounter was unsafe and unprofessional and dangerous.
The incident is the latest in a series of encounters between the U.S. and Iran in the Persian Gulf.

Why didn’t we shoot it out of the sky?
Exactly. Wondering why it’s not described as “former Iranian drone”?
Target practice on drones
One, maybe two rounds from the cannon.
Sounds to me like a failed (or practice) attack on the U.S. aircraft and should have been treated as such. No, don’t immediately shoot it down. Instead, use our ECM gear to zero in on the frequency of the corresponding control signal, hence to the location of the transmitter, and then to the destruction of the transmitter site. Just my two cents.
What u sed
Er, why wasn't all that done as the drone approached? Why was the drone allowed to actually interfere with the flight path of the F-18?
Sounds like "asleep at the switch" again much like the USS Fitzgerald.
I thought about all of that before posting. My first thought is that the blinkin’ drone may have been too small to register on radar. I’m pretty sure that an investigation will follow.
Good question, here's another:
Why didn't we triangulate the signal that was controlling the drone, blow the drone out of the sky and bomb the sh*t out of the site that was controlling the drone too?
..shoot it down how without putting the Hornets in the pattern at risk?
Sure sounds like some of our warships are unaware of their surroundings and hazards.
I like that idea.
