There was various names for five o’clock Charlie. Dad told me of ‘washing machine Charlie’ who’s beat up old plane sounded like a defective appliance. He would fly over the jungles of Guadalcanal or Bougainville(I forget which) and drop a small single bomb in the middle of the night. Mostly as a terror tactic to keep the marines awake. Occasionally he would hit something, unfortunately.
