I hope they’ll come up with a better name than Type 001A. At least their other carrier was named after a province.

The British use a numeric designation for the classes of their ships: Type 21, Type 22, Type 23 for frigates, Type 42, Type 45 for destroyers, and so forth. But individual ships are named.

Type 001A is the shipyard designation. It is not technically part of the PLAN yet, so it will get a formal name only when commissioned. (It will reportedly be called the Shandong).
