Minster for Health Bent Høie of Norway’s governing Høyre (Conservative) party has promised broadened healthcare options should the party continue to govern after the upcoming general election.

(Excerpt) Read more at thelocal.no ...

TOPICS: Politics/Elections
KEYWORDS: healthcare; norway
The Conservative Party and its main partner, the Progressive Party (sort of a moderate libertarian party), are looking to expand choice in health care.

In their system, everybody has to pay a deductible, after which further expenses at public clinics and hospitals are free. Some people use private clinics and hospitals, and there are some limited ways that people can use their public support to access private providers.

Polls indicate that the election will be close and that the final result may depend on post election negotiations among the parties qualifying for parliament.

Is their leader Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell? If it is, they won’t pass it...

How about the Conservatives promise to kick out the Muslims. They would save a ton of money by doing that.

As I understand it, they (the right-of-center parties) are o.k. with immigrants who learn the language and work. This is called the “integrationist” position.

Norway can not be compared to the U.S. They only have 5 million people — most of whom are civilized, all of their electricity is hydroelectric, and they are flush with government-owned petroleum.

I lived and worked in Norway. It is a lovely country filled with very good people. Their health care system is Socialist. The Norwegians have chosen this freely by election.

Aside from their social programs, Norway is very capitalistic. That is what supports their social welfare system. I personally disagree with this but that is their choice by free and fair elections.

Norway has another problem that few talk about. It is Muslim immigration. They now have a subset of their population that has no desire to integrate into normal Norwegian society. Their problem is not near the magnitude of Sweden next door but it is growing.

When I worked there in the 70s I did not lock my doors of the staff house nor my car. I had nothing to fear. I could walk a dark street in perfect safety. Sadly that is changing today.

ps
Do not drive drunk in Norway. You will go to jail first offence for several weeks. At closing time outside the bars and clubs would be a line of taxies. You do not drive drunk in Norway. A mate of mine did and got caught. We worked on the drilling rigs in the North Sea two weeks on and two weeks off. The Norwegians were very accomodating with him and did not want him to lose his job. His sentence was six weeks of jail time. He would go to the rig for two weeks and the police would meet him at the heliport when he came back from the rig and put him in jail for two weeks and then return him to the heliport to work for two weeks and repeat until his six week sentence was finished. Thus his six week sentence turned into 6 weeks of jail and 6 weeks of work.

If you were to compare Norway to the U.S., you’d want to consider how huge we are. Size matters when we are talking about nations. If you wanted to consider quality of life independent of whether you are a citizen of the only super-power in the world, it might be fairer to compare our states to the nations of Europe.

Thanks. Yes, Norway and the other Nordic countries were long ruled by social democrats and have extensive social welfare systems, including national health insurance. Since the 1990s, right-of-center parties have been competitive. Although the right-of-center parties have reformed the tax code, and made the economy more market-oriented, they have only tinkered around the edges of the welfare state. The Conservatives are only promising, in this election, to take another baby step in expanding choice in health care. You are also correct about immigration. Prior to the immigrants, Norway and its neighbors had almost no crime. People were free, prosperous, safe, and there was social insurance combined with opportunities for the talented and ambitious (a floor but no ceiling). An impressive achievement. It is naive to think that many people from backward countries can be allowed in without undermining this way of life.
