A robbery attempt in Detroit backfired when a teenager picked the wrong man to mess with and quickly learned he wasn't the only person armed.
Darius Summers is a mild-mannered musician in Detroit who just turned 61 years old this week. He also recently received his license to carry a concealed weapon.
"I'd never been through this," Summers said. "Never shot a gun before. All this is new to me."
On Sunday morning near his home on Detroit's west side, Summers was at a gas station.
"I just wanted some coffee, so I walked down here," Summers said.
He said a 16-year-old boy armed with a gun saw that Summers was also armed, and the teen tried to take his weapon. He stuck his gun in Summers' back, thinking he was an older, easier target.
"I said, 'All I want to do is leave,'" Summers said. "He said, 'You can't leave.' I said, 'OK. What do you want to do?'"
Summers said the teen was controlling him, but then the 61-year-old man pulled out his own gun and shot the boy in the stomach. The teen picked up the gun that he dropped and limped out of the store.
Summers said there's no way he was going to let an armed 16-year-old make him a victim.
"I didn't shoot to kill, I shot to save his life," Summers said. "I got him up off me."
Summers is a grandfather, and he tried to talk to the teen as a grandfather.
Xavier Futrell was arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder, carrying a weapon with unlawful intent and a felony firearms violation.
And then he let the “teen” reach down to pick up his weapon.
He missed the perfect opportunity for a coup de gras.
Hope that doesn't rise up to bite him.
He made a mistake letting him live.
He probably signed someone else's death warrant.
This kid is not going to stop his behavior because he got shot.
After he recovers, he'll just be more careful about his targets - maybe just shoot them at the outset in case they have a weapon as well.
No, Mr. Summers - the best thing you could have done for society and your city would have been to shoot this thug dead.
You missed that chance and likely as not, someone else is going to pay for it, possibly with their life.
He’ll get sued.
Sadly that’s correct. We put rabid dogs down for the same reason. They don’t change; they just get smarter and meaner.
Always shoot to kill and never fire a warning shot.
Then you shouldn't be carrying concealed. Get some range time.
What a sad society we have become.
“Hell get sued.”
I doubt that. The shooter isn’t anyone “of means,” and the perp has a whole flock of felonies as a result of his actions. What the shooter does have to be concerned about is retribution or revenge from the perp or his “friends” though.
Stop talking to the press.
That would appear unnecessary.
Stop talking to the press.
I watched the video and can’t believe the old guy let the perp pick up the gun...what the hell was he thinking?..he should have fired 3-4 more times into him by then...when that ‘kid’ kills somebody it will be on you grandpa...
I hope the next person to shoot that thug finishes the job (unless we get amazingly lucky and the kid turns his life around).
“”Never shot a gun before””
That is unbelievable and irresponsible. He could have carried a tire iron for protection without going to the trouble of getting a concealed permit - for what???? I don’t think I’d admit to such a thing...
"He wanted my gun so I gave it to him."
“”He said a 16-year-old boy armed with a gun saw that Summers was also armed””
Well, shoot - no pun intended.
So much for CONCEALED carry!
The kid saw that he was armed — Not very good at concealed carry, was he?
Ah yes, the “wing them” ploy.
You don’t shoot unless you or someone else is in dire reasoned fear for their life.
When you shoot, you shoot to kill.
Allowing this kid to rearm was incredibly misguided.
