Illinois has 63,000 government workers making over $100K
Illinois Policy ^ | July 27, 2017 | Joe Kaiser

High-priced government workers cost taxpayers in Illinois $10 billion a year, with municipal managers in areas surrounding Chicago reaping the most benefits.

Illinoisans are struggling under the highest property taxes in the nation, a declining population and the nation’s worst income growth, but one group is still doing pretty well – government workers.

According to OpenTheBooks.com, Illinois has 63,000 public employees making more than $100,000, costing taxpayers $10 billion. These government workers range from auto pound supervisors to corrections nurses to junior college presidents and more. One of the most lucrative government fields is that of village and city managers, many of whom out-earn every U.S. governor.

...

In the meantime, as Illinois taxpayers struggle with the one of the highest overall tax burdens in the country, and deal with personal income growth that lags behind neighboring states, government officials should take the initiative in exercising fiscal restraint and cutting the cost of government by reducing their own salaries. Taxpayers in Cook County, the collar counties and across the state of Illinois have been forced to bear the burden for too long.

And the highest paid state employee is likely a college football coach.

I believe it. All the veteran’s representatives for the unemployment offices train in Denver and we’d chat about pay, since every state pays differently. Illinois was the highest and New Mexico was the lowest. So low that they qualified for food stamps and other welfare programs.

Not in the slightest.

That's exactly how states are strangled to death.

Well, let’s see if we can figure this one out??

Clearly this is a State Government ..... “GONE WILD”! and
taxpayers can go FISH!

Pack up and GO! That’s what happened in Detroit about 40 years ago, ...... GO GO GO and they’ll be NO GOING BACK!!!

I know a Fireman in his early 50s. He’s about to retire from his 2nd job with a full taxpayer guaranteed pension on top of the first one. He will pull down well over $100,000 a year PLUS benefits for the rest of his natural life.

Ah, Illinois. When the wheels finally come off here it’s going to be epic.

Any city manager should be worth that much. No auto pound manager is.

So, in Illinois, he'll be just scraping by and probably on food stamps?

IS IS GOOD to be a “public servant”! Personally if anyone tried to convince me to my face that federal government workers were “public servants” who have sacrificed wealth and opportunity to serve the public I would likely punch them straight in the face.

Plus at least an equal amount, if not much more, retired employees.

That’s very misleading; laws in various states (including Illinois) limit the amount of state money that can be paid to a football coach; the rest comes from privately-funded sources such as athletic foundations, etc. I’m guessing the head coach at Illinois gets no more than $200,000 in state pay; the rest of his seven-figure salary comes from donors.

Typically, the highest-paid state is the individual running the state pension system. Medical school presidents are also high on the list, along with the chancellors of various universities and the state community college system—all at $300K or better. In Virginia, for example, the pension fund administrator is over $600K; the head of UVA’s medical school is north of $400K and the community college head earns about $330K annually.

Nice work if you can get it.

Hard to believe, but the (almost entirely) liberal teachers of Illinois are hell-bent on pushing their tax-paying neighbors into poverty.

Read this shocking article from last year’s Forbes:

Never thought I’d say this: income limits.

For government workers, that's exactly what should happen!

The government is effectively a monopoly - no competition - so there's no other force to keep wages in check. I favor a constitutional amendment to tie government payroll to mean state household income. They can only make more if everyone in the state is making more. Cap the total state payroll to some multiple of mean household income.

It's insane to keep handing blank checks to thieves and liars.

Illinois government workers were just granted another tax paid holiday to honor Obama. Another shaft to the taxpayers.

Sadly, I know one of the top 100 most expensive employees due an Illinois pension. He’s a good guy at a university, but, man, what he will seemingly get is out of this world good.
