If you could do well on your SATs, and wanted to be an engineer, then you would be accepted in engineering school.

If you had potential as a child, but that potential got wasted in a ghetto school where most of the students were hostile to learning, then that’s unfortunate.

Sure yeah right, a black guy in the 50s had sooooo much opportunity in the South...

A young WHITE engineer came down to discuss some issues we were having with AC fuel controls, controls that run the engine. He asked me... “what do they use in the stands, water?” i’m not making that up... water?? why in the HELL would you EVER have water in a fuel control>??

So you had to go back 60 years?

Even back when I was in college in the 70’s, if you were black and could do the work, you got a scholarship. They would bend over backwards for a qualified black student.

I have no interest in any school which decides to graduate UNqualified engineers, surgeons, or accountants, just to make some numbers.

Mechanical engineers used to be the best paid majors (1900-ish) because of the difficulty. In the West, as CAD tools and computers made it less difficult, respect went down.
In developed nations, their rarity increases their importance ... which is also why nearly every appliance repair technician in India claims to have an engineering degree.

In my experience, they tend to be moved to drafting control, configuration management, software testing, or, heaven forbid, engineering management.
And the last case results in social justice being imposed by managers on engineers.
