I presumed that also meant they could not run for elected office. I could have been wrong.

To be fair, the article notes that:
“The two who have polled ahead of the field, incumbent Mayor Mike Duggan and state Sen. Coleman A. Young II, the son of the city’s first black mayor, have no criminal records. Nor do candidates Edward Dean and Angelo Brown.”
I don’t live there, so it doesn’t matter to me.

Only 4 out of 8 being felons would be, for Detroit, described as a hopeful, improving situation.

Detroit was one the represenative of Blue Collar America...now its a blight.
This makes a mockery of democracy.
We don’t let people in prison vote for their guards and wardens and parole boards. The prisoners would vote themselves out of jail.
Now we see why Democrat politicians don’t care about our schools producing educated citizens.
The Democrat politicians take advantage of stupid voters.
“Vote for me and I’ll steal for you!”
The problem is, the Democrat politicians know that anyone stupid enough to vote for them is also too stupid to see that the Democrat politician is giving them nothing while taking the money for himself.
That's not very good, you would think that at least 90% of 'em would be.
