The last Republican mayor of Chicago was Bill Thompson, who was in office until 1931. He lost re-election against Anton Cermak, who was shot in February 1933 while shaking hands with Franklin Roosevelt.

In an ironic turn of events, Cermak the Democrat was more honest than Thompson, the Republican. Thompson was also big on ethnic slurs about Cermak, who was born in what is now the Czech Republic.
