Sometimes it is possible to deescalate. The local police here and county SWAT took four hours to calm down a suicidal man with a knife. He didn’t drop it for four hours and they didn’t shoot him either.

Likewise, anyone with an IQ above 50 knows that the police do not like to deal with someone holding a weapon. They will ask you to drop your weapon. If you do not drop it, they will shoot you.

It would seem prudent for everyone to carry a weapon, so they have something to drop instantly when commanded to do so by police. In such circumstances any failure or hesitation in following the command can lead to becoming deceased.
