Homeless mom panhandles on Market Street with newborn baby
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | July 29, 2017 | Heather Knight

San Franciscans know they’ll see all walks of life along Market Street, but a new fixture on the colorful thoroughfare has shocked even the most hardened city dwellers: a 6-week-old, homeless baby girl.

All day long, Megan Doudney, 34, sits on the sidewalk near the Four Seasons Hotel between Third and Fourth streets with little Nedahlia in her arms and a sign reading, “Anything helps.” The sight is alarming, even in this city where just about anything goes. ***

Several people have called 911, including when another homeless person’s menacing dog got in the baby’s face. Police have responded numerous times, and child welfare workers from the Human Services Agency have investigated whether the baby should be removed from Doudney. At first blush, it seems obvious that’s the right answer, but so far, the city is throwing up its hands. Apparently, the newborn is healthy and developing well, and isn’t going anywhere. *** Doudney and her baby have a private room at Hamilton Family Shelter, where they sleep every night and have access to three meals a day and parenting classes. The room is hers for three to six months, and she’s working with a case manager to figure out what comes next. Doudney receives $900 a month in Social Security benefits, and Hamilton sets aside 75 percent of that to save for her future.

Doudney said she needs more than the remaining $225 a month to afford diapers, formula, clothes and other necessities — and that she must panhandle every day to get it.

I have Social Security and two pensions and all of it goes to living expenses. Maybe I should set aside 75% of it and panhandle for the rest.

"Maybe" you could read the rest of the story - in order to have a safe place for herself and baby to sleep at night, she has to agree that the Place TAKES 75% of her money - SHE has no say in it - and puts it aside for her when the 6 months limit for staying is up....

and "maybe" you holier-than-thouers' can Thank God that 'but by His grace, there go you - "

Yeah, help her with her free ride in life. Someone should have paid for her birth control.

Hey, lefties want to play like they are the caring ones, make them live up to it.

Many of the babies here in Jakarta work multiple shifts, as they are hired out to various beggars (not their mothers) day and night.

This is “news” because she is white; many kids grow up in much worse scenarios than this baby will, but because of the soft bigotry of lowered expectations nobody makes a stink about it.

WIC would provide formula and baby food even with her SS, diapers are your responsibility, buy the store brand, same goes for wipes. Use coupons. Coupons.com has a phone app. https://www.coupons.com/coupons/ always has diaper/wipes coupons. Most grocery or Walmart’s take them.

Ask for diapers instead of money.

I was back to work 8 weeks after my last baby was born, only because he was a C-section and I couldn’t get the doc to release me any sooner, and I worked up until 2 weeks before delivery.

Even 35 yrs ago it took 2 incomes to raise 4 kids. And we used cloth diapers/training pants. Which these millennial’s wouldn’t know what they are or how to clean them.

What is wrong that you need formula, GOD gave women milk factories called Breast which is free baby food, all you have to do is stay hydrated.

A lot of these people everyone wants to have “get a job” are people you can’t trust and who are mentally ill. The problem is we no working network for the mentally ill.

"By definition you are not capable of taking care of a child if you can't put a roof over your head.".

you know this, and I know this, but common sense is no longer common.
