At least one other person was in stable condition after ride malfunction on the Fire Ball ride.

Video and a witness at the scene show that the ride spun strapped-in fair-goers around a central point and hoisted up them in the air.

Justin Eckard, a 40-year-old at the fair with his family, told the Daily News that the ride was in "full swing" when a car detached and crashed to the ground.

Eckard said that the car flew off into an area near the ride, which was shut down as those left on it began to panic.

He said that most of the riders appeared to be teenagers and that he is glad his children were too small to go on the Fire Ball.

Very sad.You don’t go to a State Fair thinking you’re going to die.

Indeed.

I’m so thankful that I have always been terrified of big, scary rides.

You see what and how much some people inhale at the state fair? I’m guessing some have thought they might die there.

I’m not putting my life in the hands of those carnies who put the rides together.

Agreed

I always monitored what we rode at county fairs. Not all rides are safe

always been terrified of big, scary rides...

Same here. Sticking to stalls and the occasional spin.

The rides were inspected. I live in columbus and i heard a news report this morning that specifically said all the rides were inspected and ready to go. Today was the opening day

Under Engineered period. Build it like it can carry 50x what it does and it will not break. No Chineezium steel allowed either.

I was in line waiting once to climb aboard a fair ride when I noticed the base of the ride was supported by 8x8 lumber. All was fine until the group ahead of us (my niece & I) started their ride.....and the base as the ride was spinning was lifting off the block of wood a good 6 inches....I convinced
the niece the ride wasn’t worth the wait.

Wven if I trusted the carnies and the state inspector, that 26 years I spent as a mechanic make me nervous of this rides because I know anything mechanical can and will fail.

But your odds are probably better of dying in your car on the way to the fair.

OMG, what a horrible tragedy! Who would think they'd be going for a day of fun and then not come home?

I remember when my dad used to take me to the Ohio State Fair when I was a kid. I loved the livestock shows and pony races. I loved seeing the champion vegetables and fruits, the winning quilts, and all the other competing items. They offered all kinds of weird foods, like fried Twinkies. and other staples like funnel cakes, Belgian waffles, and locally brewed beer. There was rousing music of many kinds playing over the whole area. People strolled with their families, having the best time ever. Guys would try to win stuffed animals for their girls in the shooting stalls. I am sure they were rigged, but some did triumph and then have to schlep around a giant panda bear for the rest of the Fair.

My senior year in high school, I was invited to exhibit my winning science fair project, having to do with the behavior of green anoles, at the Ohio State Fair. In those days, there were guys selling green anoles tethered to a velvet board by tiny collars and leashes. One morning, I went to my terrarium of anoles and found that I had acquired several extra anoles---wearing tiny collars and leashes. I took them home and cared for them too until they eventually lived out their little lifespans and joined the great mealworm in the sky.

How terrible that an innocent person lost their life on that defective ride, and how awful that an eagerly awaited event like the Ohio State Fair would lose some of its joy, especially for kids, thereafter.
