The Somalian community in Minneapolis has slammed what they claim is the racist and Islamophobic response to the fatal shooting of Justine Ruszczyk by police officer Mohamed Noor.
Minneapolis City Council Member Abdi Warsame was joined by around a dozen members of the East African community to push back on the “intense focus” on Officer Noor’s ethnicity and religion.
“Since Justine’s death there has been an intense focus on Officer Noor, blaming his actions on his race, ethnicity and religion,” Mr Warsame said.
“Former congresswoman Michelle Bachman insinuated that Noor might have shot Justine for cultural reasons.
“I’ve heard others describe this tragedy as a terrorist act carried out by a Muslim against a Christian.
“These horrific statements are dangerous and purely divisive.
“They hurt our east African and immigrant neighbours and friends.”
Mr Warsame also lambasted the media, who he claimed have unfairly focussed on Mr Noor’s ethnicity.
“What we’re seeing is a lot of rhetoric in the media where this is a Somali issue, where this person is a Somali officer,” he said.
“No, this man is an American citizen.
“When other officers committed such acts it wasn’t ‘Norwegian’ or ‘German’ or ‘white’ or ‘Protestant’ or ‘Catholic’.
“All of a sudden it is a Muslim problem. I think it is racist, it is unacceptable.”
Mr Warsame took specific aim at specific tabloid news organisations.
“For them to have a headline ‘Somali cop killer’, that is unacceptable,” he said.
He also called out “some of the tabloids in Australia” but could not recall the exact publication to which he was referring.
Ms Ruszczyk, 40, was fatally shot in the stomach by Mr Noor on July 15.
Both Mr Noor and his partner Officer Matthew Harrity had their body cameras switched off at the time of the shooting.
Mr Noor hasn't spoken with state investigators about the shooting and, legally, doesn't have to.
Transcripts of two 911 calls made by Ms Ruszczyk reveal she was reporting what she suspected to be a sexual assault taking place behind her Minneapolis home.
Minneapolis Police Chief Janeé Harteau resigned following widespread criticism for her response the fatal shooting.
She announced her resignation on the Minneapolis Police Department Facebook page.
“Last Saturday’s tragedy, as well as some other recent incidents, have caused me to engage in deep reflection,” she said.
“I’ve decided I am willing to step aside to let a fresh set of leadership eyes see what more can be done for the MPD to be the very best it can be.”

If a Norwegian Catholic was fast-tracked to make the police force more diverse, the focus on his ethnicity or religion would be just as valid as that of a Somali Muslim.
Fact is that only a Muslim would dare to make a claim of “privacy” over the details of why he murdered someone.
Islam is no more a race than Nazism is.

If it’s Islamophobic to see what a horror and hell Islam is then yes; I’m Islamophobic and wear that label with pride.
When he was getting fast tracked onto the force he was a model somali hero.
When he murders a woman for absolutely no reason he becomes “an American”.
The truth is what it is and the public isn’t going to keep playing this deadly word-game any more.
The left in general and Minneapolis in particular are responsible for this innocent lady’s death.

Neither were any of them fast tracked into the police force because of who they were, unlike the Somali cop!
What he doesn’t get is THAT’S what people are pissed about. That he received affirmative action type of treatment, so that the mayor and police chief could crow about their wonderful inclusive diverse enriched police force. The fact that they had let lose an incompetent, unstable man with force to kill on the city didn’t bother them.
The people most to blame for this murder are the police chief and the mayor. The Somali cop was just their virtue signaling token.
The “Somali community in Minneapolis”, is it? And why is this not the American community in Minneapolis? A Somali community belongs in Somalia. And an officer hired on the basis of tokenism does not belong at all.
Probably too luxurious for them. I was thinking a coal-fired banana boat or a pre-World War I ferry.
