A top EU official earlier this week threatened the use of Article 7, a mechanism that would allow for sanctions against Poland and possible suspension of its voting rights in the bloc. The measure has never been used before. "Each individual law, if adopted, would seriously erode the independence of the Polish judiciary," said Frans Timmermans, first vice president of the European Commission. "Collectively, they would abolish any remaining judicial independence and put the judiciary under full political control of the government."
European Council President Donald Tusk, a former Polish Prime Minister from the opposition Civic Platform Party, warned Thursday of "dangerous consequences" for Poland's standing on the world stage and said he had asked Duda for an urgent meeting.
"Bringing the courts under the control of the governing party in the manner proposed by the Law and Justice Party ... will ruin the already tarnished public opinion about Polish democracy," he said.
...
When asked whether the Trump administration would urge Duda to veto the measure, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said: "I am not aware if we will ask him to do that."

Join the EU and take their money = no room to complain.
In my opinion, anyway. Poland joined in 2004, long after it was apparent how bad it is.
Time for Polexit.
I believe, though I may be wrong, that the people are demonstrating against the government taking control of Poland’s Supreme Court. The EU is threatening to use an article of the EU for the first time if the President signs the legislation into law. So in this case it sounds like the protestors probably welcome the EU threat. Like I said I amy be wrong here but that is how I read it.

They are Leftist organized “protests” just as found all the time in the U.S.
The majority popular government in Poland knows the judiciary is packed with former Communists who without changing their political leanings merely changed their party labels.
The previous government in the midnight hour of their administration packed the supreme court of Poland by creating new supreme court posts and immediately filling them before the new government came into office. The new government first undid some of that nonsense and has since been struggling to do more; with various EU bodies objecting all the way. Now the popular government of Poland seeks to drain the judicial swamp the Marxist have built, and the Soros-EU deep staters are ratcheting up the “popular protests”.
Poland agreed to join Europe, not a Caliphate.
The PO Pukes are sore losers, just like our Democrats.
Poor Poland
It has the traditional invader and occupier to its East, and the new occupier dictator to its West.
What to do?
The devil is in the details. They wanted to be part of the European Union.
Well that certainly is a tidbit that makes a big difference in the legislation passed and currently before the President, and left out of the article. Yes they must be leftists that are taking to the streets in protest then.
Tusk is a traitor.
My daughter and SIL bought some land in the country there a decade ago and according to them, the new laws prohibit his neighbor from keeping his cow. Now that is both intrusive and overboard.
After reading post #8 I think you are correct, the protestors are leftists stirring up trouble.
Never has that been more literally true.
How so? BTW, read post #8 as it throws an entirely different light on the situation, it it is indeed accurate.
The EU is a plate of Soviet Communism with a helping of German Reich sauce.
Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic should withdraw from the European Union.
