The Humiliation Of Jeff Sessions
Fox News ^ | 7-20-2017 | Chris Stirewalt

Posted on 07/20/2017 1:22:47 PM PDT by blam

There is something more than a little jarring in the ongoing humiliation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

In an ill-timed, ill-focused interview with the NYT, President Trump revisited his disdain for Sessions, his first, most-ardent and most-loyal supporter in the Senate.

When supporting Trump was still considered career suicide, Sessions donned the red cap anyway. Maybe it will prove fatal for Sessions’ career, after all.

The president has not made a secret of the fact that he blames Sessions for the scandal that now engulfs the Trump administration, claiming in contravention of all available evidence that somehow if Sessions had not recused himself from the investigation into Trump’s 2016 campaign that his White House will not be under siege.

“How do you take a job and then recuse yourself?” Trump asked reporters rhetorically. “If he would have recused himself before the job, I would have said, ‘Thanks, Jeff, but I’m not going to take you.’ It’s extremely unfair – and that’s a mild word – to the president.”

Sessions seems an odd target for Trump’s blame, given how other members of his inner circle including his son, his son-in-law, his former campaign chairman and his former national security advisor have all laid the president open to the scrutiny of special counsel Robert Mueller.

Sorry, but I believe President Trump didn’t say anything in that interview that he hadn’t already said to Sessions in person.

Sessions testified before Congress that he knew before he was confirmed that he would have to recuse himself from the Russia investigations should he become AG. Unfortunately for everyone he neglected to inform Trump about this beforehand. It was a major screw-up.

Sessions was perhaps among the earliest and ardent public official supporters of Trump.

Since then he has been a major disappointment. I do not expect him to defend Trump in his current position, but it would be helpful if he would not turn his back. Just find the truth and not run and hide when the heat gets turned up. Sessions is an honest government employee. While that quality is now rare in public service it is not enough to occupy the position he has assumed—some backbone would be nice. But at least he is not Lynch.

I think Sessions didn’t want a conflict of interest appear. Would have been better to inform Trump, and waited until they could have replaced Rosenstein before recusal. But what’s done is done. I’m sure Sessions has been told by Trump what he thinks, so I don’t know what his reasoning is in telling the NYT.

First of all, Chris Stirewalt is a certified never Trumper and somewhat of a swarmy, arrogant little pr##k.

Second, let's hope Sessions takes your advice and resigns. He is not doing the job. It's his fault this whole investigation nonsense has gotten to this point.

My 2 cents

"Trump should fire Sessions yesterday."

If President Trump wanted him gone, he'd already be gone.

“That tells me the whole charade was staged for a reason that may not be clear. Yet.”

If true, half of FReepers get it, the other half....their hair-triggers are working just fine!

I cannot imagine Mattis putting up with that crap very long.

Mattis wouldn't go onto the battlefield and surrender the front.

Stirewalt is a Never Trumper just trying to stir the pot.

The interview with the NYT is a shot by Trump across the bow of the Deep State.

Yes, recusal was a mistake, but Sessions will be a part of holding the Deep State accountable to the rule of law when it is time to do so. He’s not resigning.

I think he did resign once but Trump didn’t accept it. I’m happy with the way Sessions is going after immigration and gangs, not so happy about other things. Maybe he should have been made director of ICE.

"As for the Never-Trumper Stirewalt, he can go to hell."

As if he was ever really concerned about any alleged humiliation of Sessions.

I don’t understand why Sessions ever recused himself.

There is more going on here than meets the eye...
Do not judge too quickly and remember Trump knows full well how to confuse and throw curves...

I would not consider the Trump/Sessions collaboration to be over...

Trump knows exactly what he is doing...And my guess is that Sessions knows also what is going on....
