They also eliminated Narcissistic Personality Disorder from the DSM. Probably because so many people in the field have it.
I can only speak to my personal experience with OCD.
The prior DSM required that I recognize that my “fear and anxiety are excessive or unreasonable.” With over-valued ideas, however, I thought my fears were reasonable. I didn’t “officially” have an OCD diagnosis because of that.
New language also recognizes hoarding and cheek biting as compulsive behaviors. These were my primary behaviors but rather than diagnosis as OCD Docs following the DSM kept identifying me as “impulse coltrol elsewhere described” with perhaps some body dysphoria.
Changes like this made a large difference in treatment and medication offered. My quality of life has improved a lot since I was able to xerox a few pages from the new DSM and tell the doc “This is me.”
