Lawmakers to Introduce Legislation to Grant U.S. Resident Status to Charlie Gard
Breitbart ^ | July 8,2017 | Dr. Susan Berry

Posted on 07/09/2017 2:36:09 PM PDT by Hojczyk

Two Republican members of Congress said they plan to introduce legislation next week that would grant lawful permanent resident status in the United States to critically ill baby Charlie Gard and his parents to allow the child to leave the U.K. and receive experimental treatment in America.

“Despite Charlie’s heartbreaking condition, his parents have refused to give up hope,” said Reps. Brad Wenstrup (OH) and Trent Franks (AZ). “They have advocated for him fiercely. They have raised over £1 million to pay for their son to receive experimental treatment in the United States. They have kept fighting for his life.”

When Congress returns to session next week, the two lawmakers say their bill “will support Charlie’s parents’ right to choose what is best for their son, by making Charlie a lawful permanent resident in the U.S. in order for him to receive treatments that could save his life.”

Wenstrup and Franks continued in a statement:

Should this little boy to be ordered to die — because a third party, overriding the wishes of his parents, believes it can conclusively determine that immediate death is what is best for him?

Every human life has dignity, including the lives of those who cannot speak up for themselves. When government is able to overrule a parent or guardian in determining a patient’s best interest, every vulnerable patient is put at risk. We offer Connie Yates and Chris Gard our heartfelt support as they seek to care for their son.

Pray for Charlie Gard as the Court in Britain will decide tomorrow if he lives or dies. Terrorists have more rights than these parents do,and that is terrible. God bless these congressmen for fighting for Charlie.

I totally agree with your thoughts.
This precious child deserves every fighting chance possible despite daunting odds.
I understand he is unable to see, hear, breathe or move on his own—and is literally being kept alive by a breathing tube/respirator.
No government ought to take it upon itself to determine which innocent life lives or dies.

Will this law only cover Charlie Gard, or will it also include every terminal patient in the world that is denied medical care?

Strictly speaking, wouldn’t this be an unconstitutional Bill of Attainder?

I don’t see the point in giving them citizenship, but I do think his parents should be allowed to take him wherever they want for treatment if they can afford or work out a way to get the help they are seeking.

As another poster made the point would this only be for charlie or all others in the world needing specialized medical help? that could get out of hand quickly.

My thought as well.

It is a bit of political expediency but, its construct would apply only to baby Gard and I can’t see how we can do this.

His country is wrong for removing rights but, it would be wrong to grant a right that isn’t universal here in this country

“I don’t see the point in giving them citizenship”

I believe you need to re-read the post. These Congressmen are asking that our government “grant permanent resident status.” That is not citizenship! Millions live in this country today as permanent residents. They are not citzens. Personally, if I were Trump, I’d call up Theresa May and let her know that the “trade deal” is going to go out the window if her country “kills” this little boy. The whole of Europe has gone completely nuts!

True. We won't let them kill a baby that is deathly ill, but we can kill all the healthy babies we want.
