Look at what was happening already - CNN was calling him a racist, Nazi, etc. He would be facing death threats, loss of job and career, family members being threatened.
The ‘white hispanic’ Zimmerman treatment, basically.
Would you take that ‘heat’? What about for your wife, kids, or family members? Subject them to it?
He made a reasonable choice under blackmail conditions - threats of career destruction and violence.
