As debate in the nations capital has focused on health care, Russia and secret tapes, President Donald Trumps signature proposal building a big, beautiful wall on Americas southern border has faded from the spotlight.
But preparations are quietly moving forward to start the first wall-related construction on California soil in the next few months, in an effort to translate campaign rally applause lines into cold, hard concrete.
Construction is scheduled to begin on four to eight wall prototypes by late summer, acting Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost said at a recent congressional hearing. Theyll each be 30 feet long and 18 to 30 feet high, and designed to withstand climbing, tunneling and attempts to break through.

Especially when you consider that the wall would save tax dollars by keeping at least some parasites out (we have enough home-grown ones).
Just keep tweeting, Mr. President. Keep them distracted. Your last tweet, as you leave the White House, should be, “Oh, by the way, the wall is up now.”
Do we really need prototypes of a border wall? This is not a new space station - the whole “wall” concept has been pretty well nailed down over the centuries. Just build the thing.
I would donate money to getting this wall built if that is what it takes. I should not have to donate any money, but I would if that was the only way to get it built.
Walls can be defeated in many creative ways by crafty or desperate people. It would cost nothing to build prototypes 20 or 30 feet wide and challenge people to climb over or dig under or go through. See what it takes to defeat it and then select the one that is the hardest barrier to defeat. Low cost is not the determinant here. The wall simply has to be impassable without flying over it.
63 million of us would
The wall should be built about 10-20 miles south of the existing U.S.-Mexico border. Our border with Mexico is very irregular and most of the border you can't build the wall anyway because of the high cliffs or the Rio Grande river. Better just to purchase the land and build a straight line wall. This will also eliminate the B.S. argument over property rights along the border.
I would build desal plants on the sea of Cortez and turn the desert all the way to Juarez into an agriculture belt and ask the US if they want have water to do the same on our side.
I would not oppose an economic zone on each side of the border with free movement. In San Diego area north on the 15 and the 5 we have border checks 55 miles north of the border. Draw the line there on checks and use the current border patrol to provide additional control at that point, drones, copters, etc. There would be free movement in the agriculture zone and at Mexicali/Calexico and SD/TJ.
It's interesting that no one flinches at the cost of building a highway, but the same people are up in arms when it comes to national security.
A lawsuit is already planned to delay prototype construction, to avoid disturbing the Quino Checkerspot Butterfly. Apparently, a 30 foot segment of wall would so disrupt the mood as to totally screw up mating dates. (The enabling legislation, The Secure Fence Act, specifically exempts it from environmental restrictions)
That would be around $1,000 per person on average. Some people would have to donate quite a bit more to offset those who could only afford $50 or $100. I would STILL do it, as long as every penny I donated went to the wall and only to the wall.
I paid 21000 in fed taxes last year plus ss and medicare. Imagine how much more of my check i would have if illegals were off the dole and they eliminated fraud and corruption. ROI is off the charts.
Yes, you do need prototypes — that’s the best way to determine what this “thing” you want built actually looks like. Prototyping, in a project this large, could save train-loads of money. (Also, AFAIK, funds are available now for prototypes — but not for wall building; so, there’s really no choice.)
