I only know 2 people living in Ukraine, but both say Poroshenko is a horrible and hated president. He has learned how to sucker the west (people like McCain) out of money by using the "Russia is picking on us" line. He has shelled his own people and accused Russia of doing in order to get instant funding from the US.

I have no illusions that Putin is any angel either... but both sides have their issues and we have to take anything any of them say with a grain of salt.

Almost every politician in Ukraine is horrible, but the good thing is that current horrible politicians are much less bad than the horrible politicians from short time ago. Ukraine is in a lot of trouble and massively targeted by Russian propaganda. Looks like these people have bought at least some of this propaganda. It is quite easy to do when your life is hard.

I believe Ukraine can be fixed, but it will be a hard fight. Especially since they are in bad shape and Russia will use their considerable resources to hinder it in every way. Yet have a look at Poland. 25 years ago it was as poor and miserable as Ukraine, but they firmly chose capitalism and free market economy and are now a decent middle income country. Ukraine still let the commie economic structures and dependence on Russia linger and same as all the other post-commie countries without oil choosing that ended up in poverty.

“Russia is picking on us” is not a made up thing. Russia actually invaded Ukraine and has killed over 10,000 people there. When it comes to civilian casualties then have a look at this video of Russians shooting rockets from civilian areas. This cynical use of civilians as human shields is the cause of the casualties.
