Well this housing allowance should be means tested just like every other entitlement that congress foist upon the tax payer.
I see no reason that Nancy Pelosi and the other millionaires in congress who have done VERY WELL for themselves while destroying the economy should get another cent from the taxpayer.
They can telecommute from offices in their home districts.
Keeping those pompous a-holes out of Washington would be a boon to individual liberty.
And the design is already government-approved.
I say build a mobile home village somewhere outside of DC and put up the congressmen two to a trailer. We could even provide bus service to get the miscreants to work.
1. Build congressional billets in the DC area that are built to the same standard as barracks for enlisted military personnel. If congress wants to improve their digs, military housing has to be improved across the boards first. IMHO, even the newest E-1 busting his or her butt this morning is going to invest more time and effort in the next 24 hours to serve their country than the average congress critter. Their accomodations should be generally on par. The congress critters can even have a day room for their little cocktail parties that are too big for their offices.
or,
2. Dock congressional salary, which I believe is already structured for maintenance of a second household, and make the stipend for DC housing a matter for the congressional district (for reps) and the state (for senators). No reason a congressman from Northern VA, South central PA, etc. should be getting the same stipend as somebody from Montana, when the former all live in easy commuting distance.
or,
Decentralize and/or eliminate all the federal offices in DC and have the agencies, contractors, lobbyists etc. move elsewhere. This will lower property values and then the poor wittle wepwesentatives can afford to pay rent without digging even deeper into taxpayer's pocket.
On second thought after reading the article - which I had trouble bringing up - nothing should be even be considered without first pouring over FINANCIALS - means test the creeps and go from there.
Does anyone else have trouble going to links even WITH ad blocker? It’s driving me crazy!!
Alternatively, he could move to stop the federal interference in all areas of human life, that serve to multiply the cost of living to obscene levels...
Bye Jason. I hope I never hear about you the rest of your or my life.
If this is the way this asshole reasons and thinks, we are well rid of him in congress. Go home, idiot!!
I’m not going back to the article but I hope he’s not saying his airfare back and forth (DC/UT) is taxpayer paid....
Don’t run for office if you can’t “afford” to serve.
That weasel. There are people who make less than he does, ARE ON-CALL who work in DC and can’t afford to live there even if they wanted to. They don’t get any stipend.
Q: Are booze, tobacco and/or illegal drugs allowed in military billets? If not, none should be allowed in Congressional housing. Any any violators of that policy should be immediately expulsed.
Ditto for minors.
This is a horrendously complex problem. On the one hand, Congressional salaries should provide an adequate living - and they are not even close here - on the other hand much of their costs are caused by the high cost of living in DC caused by their own political whoring.
Where is it written in the constitution that the seat of government should become a major commercial center for the buying and selling of goods paid for by the taxpayers, including the business of political prostitution.
Soon after the assassination attempt on HOR reps, one Congress swampthing suggested they should have the gov pay for their home security. That BS was silenced.
They can't make health care affordable, yet have the nerve to ask for a housing allowance? Too much swamp water.
They’d just come up with some way to make each bunk cost the taxpayers $2500/month, or more.

Looks like the DC school district has some vacant properties available. Taxpayers could make some inquiries for our poor, beleaguered Congress. And then find a suitable place to stick them.
Uh, yep...
"If he had a proper home in Washington rather than a cot in his office, Chaffetz said, he wouldnt need to fly home every week on the taxpayers dime, and his wife, Julie, could visit more often."
Why don't they take advantage of the Internet and do all business securely from their home districts instead of even being in DC exposed 24/7 to the slime?
