South African police have used stun grenades, rubber bullets and water cannon to try to disperse anti-immigration protesters in the capital, Pretoria, and keep them from foreign nationals who had gathered to express alarm about recent attacks.
A police official said 136 people had been arrested in the past 24 hours.
Resentment against foreign nationals has sometimes turned deadly amid accusations that they take jobs from locals in a country where unemployment is more than 25%. Others are blamed for drug-dealing and other crimes.
In 2015, anti-immigrant riots in and around the city of Durban left at least six people dead. About 60 people were killed in similar violence seven years earlier.
On Friday protesters in Pretoria marched towards the foreign ministry, some carrying sticks or pipes. A petition was handed to the ministry in which they suggested the government teach immigrants to speak properly. The petition added: They are arrogant and they dont know how to talk to people, especially Nigerians,.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation criticised authorities for giving permission for a march of hatred.
We dont have hate! We dont have hate! one foreign national was recorded as shouting in a video posted by local broadcaster eNCA.
A statement issued by President Jacob Zumas office said South Africans should not blame all crime on foreign nationals. It cited recent reports of violence in Pretoria and hate speech on social media.
Many citizens of other countries living in South Africa are law abiding and contribute to the economy of the country positively, Zuma said. It is wrong to brandish all non-nationals as drug dealers or human traffickers.
Amnesty International accused the authorities of failing to address toxic populist rhetoric that blames and scapegoats refugees and migrants.

The South Africans are having that too.
Despite high unemployment, South Africa is one of Africas largest economies and remains a draw for people across the continent. Businesses run by Somalis, Ethiopians and others are often targeted in anti-foreigner protests.
Crime in SA,including violent crime,is at breathtaking levels. Many of the worst crimes are committed by illegals.
I've visited SA several times, including recently. To describe it as an armed camp with skyscrapers is to be too kind.
I suppose they can resort to their old standby. Neclacing.
Racists!
Hmm. It’s getting very interesting, to see so many of the left’s “intersectionalities” going after each other. It’s not just happening in the US, either. It’s almost like ever since President Trump got elected, they know that there’s not, under him, going to be the global redistribution (by many names) of western wealth to spread around like excess government cheese, and they’re jostling for place in the victimhood lottery.
I was in South Africa a couple of years ago. In discussion with employers regarding this issue was the local workers were lazy.Workers from other parts of Africa were considered desirable because they worked hard, unlike the locals. Every restaurant and store I went to had non natives-( Zimbabwe is a big labor force) working.
Didn’t South Africa already make its statement once and for all in the 1990’s against immigrants?
I have not one fond thing to say about apartheid, but it seems the whites became the oppressed and the apartheid is just transferred to the shade of blackness. The documentaries that I have seen are appalling. The ANC and the government are despicable.
Kid in Classroom: Why are you wearing that hat?
Dumb Donald: I don’t have a face
Kid in Classroom: Right
[Moves to seat next to Mushmouth]
Kid in Classroom: Man, what’s his problem?
Mushmouth: [Babbles incoherently] Budeep a bubba da beep my lubba.
Old Weird Harold: You watch your mouth.
My limited experience with white South Africans...*recent* experience, that is...involves us having stayed in a suburb of Johannesburg a few years ago called "Sandton".That suburb is written up in wikipedia as the wealthiest residential community in Africa and I find that easy to believe.Right next to our very nice little hotel was a huge, modern Hilton and a three minute walk from our hotel's front gate (gates with guards are routinely seen in SA) was a Rolls Royce/BMW dealership.
The whites in *that* particular area didn't seem oppressed.
Just sayin'...
Necklacing
Necklacing is the practice of summary execution and torture carried out by forcing a rubber tire, filled with gasoline, around a victim’s chest and arms, and setting it on fire. The victim may take up to 20 minutes to die, suffering severe burns in the process.

I couldn’t remember what it was. Gruesome.
George Soros and the stench of his globalist money extends even here.
If you ever watched the AMC spy drama, ‘The Americans’ they showed a guy getting necklaced by a South African ANC member, but done here in America.
Winnie Mandela was big into neclacing.
Let’s jail George, take his money, and distribute that to all his people. That should make him happy
