U.S. President Donald Trump urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to do more to relax Indian trade barriers on Monday during talks in which both leaders took great pains to stress the importance of a strong U.S.-Indian relationship.
At a closely watched first meeting between the two, Trump and Modi appeared to get along well. Modi pulled in Trump for a bear hug on the stage as the cameras rolled in the Rose Garden.
"I deeply appreciate your strong commitment to the enhancement of our bilateral relations," Modi told him. "I am sure that under your leadership a mutually beneficial strategic partnership will gain new strength, new positivity, and will reach new heights."
Trump was also warm but made clear he sees a need for more balance in the U.S.-India trade relationship in keeping with his campaign promise to expand American exports and create more jobs at home. Last year the U.S. trade deficit with India neared $31 billion.
Trump said he would like a trading relationship that is "fair and reciprocal."(continued)

I wish Modi chose to speak in English. He can speak good English, I am certain.
Indian Prime Minister #Modi was so moved by President #Trump remarks that he came over to give him a big hug. #ModiInUS
President Trump showing Ivanka how to hug someone.
Another little known fun fact: President Modi has won both the Indian Papa Smurf and Ernest Hemingway lookalike contests for every year since 2002.
Indeed!
awwww
I meant the speech today! When in Rome, do like the Romans do. College Educated Indians are mostly fluent in English. Big advantage over so many non-English speaking countries. Might as well give speeches in English and connect with Americans.
How about start with India taking back all illegal aliens and criminal Indians? Start there before anything else. This was a campaign promise and now again time for Trump to step up and honor a promise made.
Name the globalists and attack.
These foreign banks and corps have meetings on how to overturn sovereign nations. Name them. Imprison them. Attack them.
Modi speaks pretty effective English, but his confidence level in it seems significantly lower than when speaking in Hindi.
He transforms into a completely different animal when using Hindi and can go extempore as he pleases, while in English, it would be more staccato.
And may be he is taking a leaf out of the Japanese/Russian/Chinese books. Leaders of those countries seemingly never speak in English when in public!
Growing up in India, I began learning English at Kindergarten age. So Indians havea distinct advantage over Russian, Chinese & Japanese.
Modi could have read a prepared speech in English. Fox & CNN turned him off as soon as he began speaking in Hindi. It would have been nice for me and others to see hear his tone and emotions when delivering the speech. Reading from a translation is not the same.
It’s all about keeping the H-1B visa scam going with these Indians.
And how much of that was in IT services?
I honestly think he was targeting a domestic audience since his government is entering the “re-election” lap (polls may well be pushed forward to next year). Modi is without doubt the sharpest politician in India by a distance: he relishes symbolism.
Completely different setting: when Modi won his third election as Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2012, he made his first speech in Hindi, not his native Gujarati. This act was not missed by observers, who claimed he was openly eyeing Delhi.
You make good points.
